Yashin in fashion
AT AN AGE WHEN MOST PLAYERS are ready to hang up their skates, Alexei Yashin has found his second wind. The 35-year-old former NHLer averaged 20 minutes in ice time and led Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in scoring with 21 goals and 47 points in 56 games this season. Yashin played 10 games for Lokomotiv during the 2004-05 NHL lockout, then signed with the Russian club in the summer of 2007 after the New York Islanders bought out the final four years of his 10-year, $87.5-million contract. The Islanders handed over $17.4 million just to be rid of Yashin and the buyout is on their books through 2013-14. As it stands now, in 2010-11, Yashin will be their biggest cap hit. + Plus Minus –
WHITE KNIGHT Atlanta’s Todd White had a highly productive season on a Thrashers team that improved down the stretch. MARTY’S TIME? Martin Brodeur sets wins record, but best of all, he’s finally rested for the playoffs. CENTURY MARK Detroit is the first team in NHL history to top the 100-point barrier nine straight seasons. ALL SIZZLE Tampa made a lot of noise leading up to the season, but failed to deliver on any of it. IN THE REDDEN Rangers would love a do-over on Wade Redden’s six-year, $36-million deal from last summer. Ouch. FINAL FAILURE Why have the past 11 Cup runners-up combined to win just one playoff round the following year?…

Sink OR Swim
THIS JUST IN: THN’s Decision Desk has just declared the San Jose Sharks the best team never to have won the Stanley Cup. They’re invited to pick up their waffle maker at our Toronto offices when they come here to play the Maple Leafs next season. By that time, of course, the Sharks may no longer hold that distinction, in which case we’ll be happy to pass it along to the Buffalo Sabres. The Sharks came into existence 18 years ago and it seems so long since the days of George Kingston’s moustache, 11-win seasons and the Cow Palace. Since then, they have done almost everything right. They’ve drafted well and developed their young players even better, they’ve hired great coaches, they’ve managed to gain a very solid foothold with a string of sellouts in…

PLAYOFF PREVIEW
NHL POST-SEASON PRIMER ’09 For all of the criticism it takes, no one can argue with the fact the NHL’s “loser point” allows more teams than ever to legitimately say they’re in a playoff race late into the season – although, the three-point games also make it harder to move up in the standings. As of late March, 22 NHL teams were still in the running for a berth in the post-season and a chance at Stanley Cup glory. And we’ve got the inside scoop on all of them: How they got to where they are; what could do them in; the lingering questions that surround each team; and a key statistic that has played a role in their fortunes throughout the season. We’ve pegged the West as the conference to beat again…
