Inside the Numbers
Anything is possible SINCE THE 1994 PLAYOFFS (the first year the NHL adopted the top eight teams format), 36 teams out of 224 entered the playoffs with a record inferior to .500 in their final 10 regular season games. From this group, only 16 won their first series. Purists would say the playoffs are a new season. Maybe, but 67 percent of teams that entered the playoffs with at least seven wins in their last 10 games also won their conference quarterfinal. Certainly, the odds are with the teams that finished strong down the home stretch. Of course, we could talk about the Florida Panthers, who finished the 1995-96 season with a 6-14-3 record and went to the Stanley Cup final. And what about the Red Wings, who won only one…

2 Minutes in the Box WITH PATRICK O’SULLIVAN
What was your ‘welcome to the NHL’ moment? Playing Anaheim and getting hit from behind by Chris Pronger in my first NHL game. Best album of all time? That is a tough one. I’d say anything by The Beatles. Who is your roommate and how is he? In Edmonton I’ve got my own room. Maybe that is because I was just traded, I don’t know. What is the best trash-talk you have ever heard? That’s another tough one. You’d have to ask someone who talks more. I don’t really talk much out there. What was your last job before hockey? I never really had one. I worked at hockey schools and stuff. I always just worked at getting better at hockey and I’ve, luckily, never had to have a job. What is the greatest thing you have seen in the…

BACK TO SQUARE ONE
Nearly 20 years ago, a greenhorn THNer named Jason Kay caught up with New Jersey sophomore Brendan Shanahan. Two decades later, Kay is THN’s editor-in-chief and Shanny is a sure-fire Hall of Famer. We asked him many of the same questions and, well, things change over time. 2 Minutes in the Box WITH BRENDAN SHANAHAN What is your ideal evening? Staying home for dinner with the family, reading my kids’ book and putting them to bed. Favorite food? Steak, cooked by me. What do you drive? Range Rover. Most respected opponent? Joe Sakic. Favorite hobby? Tennis. Favorite actor? Tom Hanks. Favorite visiting city? Montreal. Who was your boyhood hero? My three brothers: Danny, Brian and Shaun. What was you ‘welcome to the NHL moment?’ First shift of my second game. It was in Toronto. Actually hearing the coach say my line was up and watching the player I was…

Brodeur’s shot to pull a ‘Roy’
HAVING WON THREE STANLEY CUPS, four Vezinas, Olympic gold and more regular season wins than anyone in NHL history, Martin Brodeur can’t possibly have anything left to prove, can he? Judging by the spirit at a recent THN staff meeting, the answer to that question is “hell, yeah.” Apparently, the Jersey giant still has some convincing to do if he wants to be recognized as the undisputed netminding champ and the debate cuts along myriad lines. There is the Brodeur camp, which believes the aforementioned achievements, combined with a host of others – a Calder Trophy, seven first- or second-team all-star berths and an imminent shutout record, to name a few – are more than enough to cement his place on the top plateau. Alternately, you have the Patrick Roy camp, which…
