A surprise in General

CALVIN DE HAAN has even caught the scouts by surprise. “He’s come from totally off the radar,” said one NHL scout of the 5-foot-11, 165-pound Oshawa Generals defenseman. De Haan wasn’t supposed to be in the Ontario League this season, let alone be considered a potential NHL first-rounder in June. He was headed back for a second Jr. A season with Kemptville, near Ottawa, prepared to weigh some handsome NCAA offers. But during the summer, he elected to report to the Generals. “I wanted to explore the NCAA route, but in the end Oshawa matched the education package, so it was pretty much a no-brainer to play in this league,” de Haan said.
