INITIAL IMPRESSIONS MATTER to Trevor Timmins, a rising young star on professional hockey’s scouting and management scene. And on the first task he had on his first day as an employee of an NHL team, Timmins left a first impression that doubled as a harbinger of his future as a producer of elite-level on-ice talent. “My first day with the Senators, I got thrown a T-shirt and I was handed a list of names,” Timmins said. “The names were of (prospects) I was supposed to pick up at the airport. Q Should the NHL automatically penalize ANY hit to the head? No 66.7% Yes 33.3% FOR A NUMBER OF reasons, Jason Blake is a poster boy for the NHL’s debate on head shots. First of all, the Toronto Maple Leafs winger sustained what many believed to be a concussion after a hit from the Atlanta Thrashers’ Colby Armstrong in late November. Secondly, players with Blake’s small stature – he’s listed at 5-foot-10 – are often cited as the reason why it’s physically impossible to eradicate head shots from the game without discouraging quality bodychecks. More than one player among the 90 polled by The Hockey News (three per team) used size discrepancies among skaters as the reason why there should not be automatic penalties for head shots.
