Going far on good sense
WHILE SENIOR RIGHT WING-ER Erik Condra has put up big numbers at Notre Dame, what he has done off the ice has made even more of an impact on the Fighting Irish program. Part of the first class under fourth-year coach Jeff Jackson, Condra paced Notre Dame in scoring the past three seasons and helped lead a Fighting Irish resurgence that includes a CCHA title in 2007, a perennial spot in the national rankings and a trip to last season’s NCAA Frozen Four final. “Erik has a passion and maturity for the game and has had a big influence on the change in the culture of the program over the past three years,” said Jackson, who named Condra captain this season. “He’s a unique kid in that he plays the game at…

+ Plus Minus –
SERGE AHEAD Sergei Fedorov passes Alex Mogilny to become the all-time leading goal-scorer among Russian NHLers. BROTHERS KOIVU Older, little brother Saku looks good; younger, bigger brother Mikko looks awesome. BIG HOSS Marian Hossa was impressing his new teammates in Detroit. See the goal he scored against Atlanta, his old team? Wow. RICKETY DIPIETRO Isles brass must be sweating the fact Rick DiPietro is signed for 12 more years and can’t stay healthy. KNUCKLEHEADS More and more it seems throwing a good clean hit means you must be prepared to fight later in the game. SLOW STARTS Martin Biron, Sergei Samsonov, Mike Fisher, Ryan Malone and Alex Ovechkin all have Octobers to forget.…

NHL Team Reports
Big Time Every NHL team has at least one player who has stepped up this season by playing more minutes and a bigger role. Florida PANTHERS GM JACQUES MARTIN revamped the team’s blueline during the off-season and Florida entered training camp with an abundance of defensemen. Martin figured it couldn’t hurt to stockpile proven defenders. He was right. Bryan McCabe, brought in from Toronto, injured his back in the second period of the opener at Carolina. Bryan Allen logged heavy minutes in the first two games, before his surgically repaired knee buckled. He had more surgery and is out until February. Cory Murphy, waived and then brought back, is likely out until at least mid-December with a shoulder injury. Florida’s injury woes have meant the team’s healthy defensemen have had to carry a heavier load.…

Shootout Stars
IT FIGURES the team from Texas would be the best in a shootout. The Dallas Stars went 12-1 back in 2005-06, the first season the NHL introduced the breakaway format to break ties. And three years into the goalie-versus-shooter showdown, Dallas remains the most lethal post-overtime club; the Stars have gone 26-8 all-time. (Dallas didn’t have any shootouts in the first month of 2008-09.) New Jersey (28-16) had the most shootout wins entering 2008-09, while Edmonton (25-16) went 15-4 last season – the most shootout victories in a single season. Three teams that have had little to cheer about since the lockout have nonetheless had success in the shootout: Tampa Bay (18-8), the Islanders (22-11) and Atlanta (22-15). Meanwhile, provincial rivals Ottawa (7-17) and Toronto (10-21) have struggled, as have Calgary (8-15),…
