SNAPSHOTS

THE BLACKHAWKS have the two highest-paid door openers in the world. When Nikolai Khabibulin plays, backup Cristobal Huet gets $68,598 per game to work the door from his seat at the end of the bench. When Huet plays, Khabibulin gets $82,317 a night to display his latch skills. BRIAN HAYWARD’S famous shark mask, featured in The Hockey News Greatest Masks of All-Time, actually had a twin. I’ve packed light and I’m starting to wear the same clothes over and over.”…

Not bad for Dallas newbie FABIAN BRUNNSTROM.…

Dollar Daze

A VETERAN SCOUT once said that projecting 18-year-old hockey players as NHLers is akin to walking into a high school classroom and picking out which pimply-faced students will turn out to be the doctors, lawyers and captains of industry. Such is the inexact science of scouting. But scouts aren’t the only ones, particularly when it comes to the league’s six Canadian-based teams these days, who are charged with the task of forecasting an uncertain future. Those who guard the purse strings on the Canadian NHL teams must hedge their bets against a fluctuating Canadian dollar the same way a bird dog stakes his reputation on the team’s next power forward. Much has been made of the Canadian dollar, particularly in the post-lockout era of the NHL. Its robustness has been credited…
