INSIDE THE NUMBERS

A KIDS’ GAME…OR IS IT? IN A LEAGUE with a teenaged scoring champ (Sidney Crosby) two seasons ago and 18-year-olds making headlines daily, you might think the NHL is a young man’s domain. It’s not. In the first season after the lockout, 2005-06, the average age of NHLers was the highest it had been in 36 years. That number was close to the highest average of the past 60 years (28.71 in 1966-67), but significantly different than the lowest average age of the period (25.32 in 1981-82). HE WAS ALWAYS THERE for his hockey teammates and now Ben Stafford is bringing that same Semper Fi – “always faithful’’ – allegiance to his new U.S. military brethren in Iraq. The former Philadelphia Flyers prospect and member of the Phantoms’ 2004-05 Calder Cup-championship AHL team left hockey shortly after that celebration to enroll in medical school. At the beginning of his career, many in the Flyers organization thought the Yale University…

“I brought my passport for sure. I forgot it one road trip and that didn’t go over too well. I brought my Xbox 360 for the hotel. I’ve got NHL 09 and I have a season going with the Leafs; that’s going pretty good. I also have a lucky tie. It’s hard living out of a suitcase. I’ve packed light and I’m starting to wear the same clothes over and over.”…

ASK ADAM

Adam, When a rookie (who is not eligible to be sent down to the minors) signs an entry level contract like Luke Schenn did recently, does he still get paid if he is sent down to his junior team? Thanks, Jeff Miron, Barrie, Ont. Jeff, All rookies, like all players, are paid a pro-rated sum for each NHL game they play. But unlike the veterans, they must play at least 10 games for their full-season salary to kick in; otherwise, they’ll have to make do with whatever NHL signing bonus they agreed to while playing with their junior team. Adam, What’s with the referees kicking players out of the faceoff? I always see players switching. Can you give me the reasoning behind why this happens? Adam Scicluna, Toronto Adam, As noted under Rule 76.3 of the NHL rulebook, linesmen…
