ATLANTA

SUMMER GRADE D+ The Thrashers needed a lot of help this summer. They got a little. Their most important long-term acquisition was Zach Bogosian, the third overall pick in the draft. Bogosian, who turned 18 in July, is a good bet to make the team and lead the defense corps for years to come. The biggest short-term splash came from the free agent signing of Ron Hainsey, whom the Thrashers hope will be the puck-carrying defenseman they need. On offense, the Thrashers needed scoring help for Ilya Kovalchuk. They ended up with Marty Reasoner and Jason Williams. SCHED GLANCE The Thrashers were 2-13-3 last season in the second of back-to-back games, so playing three fewer back-to-backs this season ought to help. Four of those instances come in a 15-games-in-30-days stretch in…

HOCKEY GETS PLAY IN SPORTS MUSEUM

NEW YORK CONVENTIONAL WISDOM SAYS the NHL’s popularity in the United States peaked in 1994 when the New York Rangers edged Vancouver for the Stanley Cup. But coming off an exciting Detroit-Pittsburgh final this year, hockey might get another Big Apple-based boost from the new Sports Museum of America (SMA) in lower Manhattan. The 45,000-square-foot venue, which opened May 7 at a cost of $100 million, doesn’t treat hockey like a tractor pull. Instead, it gets a sizeable, dedicated gallery, just like baseball, football, basketball, soccer, auto racing, tennis and golf. “My inspiration for this museum was that the different sports halls of fame aren’t visited as much as they should be,” said founder Philip Schwalb in his office overlooking Battery Park and the Statue of Liberty. “Amazingly, less than five percent of…

MONTREAL

SUMMER GRADE B– Incomplete. That pretty much sums up the Canadiens’ off-season. Montreal, which surprisingly finished first in the Eastern Conference last season, was seeking a big, offense-minded second-line center and made a pitch for free agent Mats Sundin, who was still unsigned by anyone in mid-August. The Habs have improved up front with the addition of ex-Flames left winger Alex Tanguay through a trade and former Penguins enforcer Georges Laraque through free agency. Tanguay slumped to 18 goals last year, but did score more than 20 in each of the previous four seasons. The 6-foot-3, 243-pound Laraque will keep opponents honest while alleviating some of the physical pressure from defenseman Mike Komisarek. SCHED GLANCE The Bell Centre won’t see Sidney Crosby and Pittsburgh until Feb. 3 – and then again…

HOCKEY LOGO SHOWDOWN

Cruise your browser over to thehockeynews.com and click on the ‘Logo Central’ link to join in. Some votes may already have closed. IT’S THE IMAGE THAT BRINGS a city together and sets it apart from everywhere else. When players say they’re playing for what’s on the front of the jersey, not the back, this is what they’re talking about. The colors, mascots and traditions collide in an emblem forever emblazoned on flags, hats and hoodies – until some genius in marketing decides to go for a more youthful demographic, that is. The Hockey News’ Logo Rankings and Tournament is in full swing over at thn.com, where readers have the opportunity to choose the best emblem in hockey. Based on rankings established by a panel of THN staffers, logos from the NHL, the minor…
