LUNDQVIST LEADS PARADE OF OVERPAID

“The law of supply and demand is out of whack when it comes to NHL goalies” FOR FOUR YEARS AFTER HE was drafted, Henrik Lundqvist was an outstanding Swedish goalie who was a long-term prospect for the New York Rangers. Next season, he’ll be the second-highest-paid goalie in the NHL. Holy overpayment, Batman. Lundqvist is wildly overpaid, even more than he was when he signed a one-year deal worth $4.25 million last summer. When his new contract kicks in, Lundqvist will have a salary fit for a King (his nickname) and will have the highest salary cap hit for a netminder. His actual salary of $6.875 million next season will trail only the $7 million made by Roberto Luongo. Forget for a moment that as of this writing, the Rangers were out of…

Starting from 10

10 Injuries saw MATT KEETLEY move up from No. 4 on Calgary’s depth chart. 9 With 10 saves on 10 shots, TYLER WEIMAN was perfect in his only Avs appearance. 8 If Ottawa needs more goalie controversy, they have BRIAN ELLIOTT on call. 7 Will JIMMY HOWARD ever get the job in Detroit? This year he has played once. 6 THOMAS GREISS isn’t going to get a whole lot of work in San Jose. 5 JON QUICK is yet another soldier in the Kings’ goaltender army. 4 Is there another DAN CLOUTIER, or is the ex-Canuck finally back in L.A.? 3 This Swiss didn’t miss; TOBIAS STEPHAN was great in his one Dallas start. 2 Last in the NHL with a 7.20 GAA is St. Louis call-up MAREK SCHWARZ. 1 Despite that other guy, DREW MACINTYRE has seen the…

HUNTERS NOW HUNTED

I’m no expert in management, but why not hire two of the brightest minds in the OHL to turn the Toronto Maple Leafs into a contender? Mark and Dale Hunter make a pretty darn good team and they bring a lot to the table: NHL experience, Memorial Cup championship team-building and, well, good luck buying a ticket to a London Knights home game. They’re not afraid to deal their own blood to get a good prospect who can help the team and I’m sure there are several top players and Knights alumni in the NHL who would gladly return to play for a Hunter-managed team.…

‘IT WAS TOUGH BEING TRADED’

I HAVE TO ADMIT, it was tough being traded from Nashville to Florida last summer. I played with a lot of guys for a long time there and, as a franchise original who was a Predator since the first season in 1998-99, was there through the so-called rough times. Last season, though, Nashville was one of the top teams in the NHL. The team was built very well and had a chance to contend for the Stanley Cup for several years. So, it was definitely disappointing to leave. But there were circumstances which I understood. The team was for sale, there were financial problems. So, I wasn’t the only one moved. Paul Kariya (to St. Louis), Scott Hartnell and Kimmo Timonen (both to Philadelphia) were also sent packing. It’s always going to…
