The defenseman spent the past two seasons with Toronto of the AHL. “Adding a player of Brad’s caliber to our roster is invaluable,” said Florida coach Gerry Fleming. “Brad is a big, strong steady defenseman, who brings a lot of NHL experience to our team.”…Wheeling replaced third-year coach Glenn Patrick with former Toledo coach Greg Puhalski after the Nailers’ 9-20-3 start…Elmira coach Steve Martinson won his 600th game. – MIKE MASTOVICH NORTH AMERICAN LEAGUE USA U-17 sniper could star in OHL Only a handful of players from the U.S. national team development program under-17 squad remain uncommitted to NCAA…
Time to play works for Brule
Gilbert Brule now admits it may have been better to start in the AHL, learn the pro game without quite as much pressure, then head up to Columbus. Hindsight usually is 20/20. After scoring a modest nine goals and 19 points in 78 NHL games with the Blue Jackets, Brule simply couldn’t find his scoring touch this year. He scored just one goal and four points in 31 games. As the new year began, the Blue Jackets decided his career would best be served by a stint with the Syracuse Crunch. “I want to play in the NHL and it’s hard to take at first, but it’s definitely good to come play a lot here,” said Brule, a highly skilled center chosen sixth overall in the 2005. “I’m out there all the time; regular…

ABOUTFACE ALTERS FUTURE
THERE HAVE BEEN ONLY SIX Providence Bruins in the franchise’s 16-year history to play all 80 regular season games, an exclusive club Pascal Pelletier joined last year. Staying healthy was about all that went right for the Newfoundland-born left winger, whose struggles to follow up a breakthrough season in 2005-06 cast doubt from even his biggest supporters. “I think, as an organization, we probably said in our heads that, more than likely, he isn’t going to be back,” said Providence coach Scott Gordon. “He had a terrible second half. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. He had a good playoff and came back trying to prove everybody wrong in Boston. “He’s put himself in a position where he had a great training camp and he’s played well down here. A guy that…
