JOB SECURITY

If the fighters in the NHL read The Hockey News, I guess it’s safe to say the goal-scorers don’t. Every other week THN mentions scoring is down, but the goal-scorers do not get it together and change the problem. One little blurb in THN about goons losing their jobs, and boom! the NHL is a donnybrook again. I guess the goal-scorers are too busy reading the Wall Street Journal. Keep up the good work. GOING OUT WITH A BANG

MICHIGAN’S KEVIN PORTER has captained the U.S. national junior team, led the Wolverines in goals in both his sophomore and junior seasons and was a fourth round pick of the Phoenix Coyotes in 2004. But with new linemates, a new position and his longtime partnerin-crime, T.J. Hensick, graduated, there were some questions about how Porter would respond in his senior season. Well, its safe to say those questions have been answered. After making the switch from wing to center, Porter is on a goala-game pace and led the nation in scoring with 18 goals and 29 points through 18 games. “Playing center took a little getting used to, but it’s going to help me be a better player,” Porter said. “Before, with T.J., it was more him carrying the puck and me trying to…

100 PEOPLE OF POWER AND INFLUENCE

1 Sidney Crosby PITTSBURGH PENGUINS CENTER ‘P’ stands for Prolifi c Penguin, Powerful Pitchman and Primetime Producer. Crosby, 20, is the face of the NHL. He sells jerseys, fi lls stands and puts points on the board. Name another player who was the subject of a tug of war between Canadian and U.S. television networks in the 2007 playoffs. It’s no coincidence the NHL is changing its schedule next season so Crosbymania will hit all 30 markets. 2006-07 7 2 Gary Bettman NHL COMMISSIONER There are cracks in the armor of the venerable commissioner. He didn’t have his best year and it’s no secret some owners want to see more Canadian teams. Instead, Bettman, 55, is keen on putting franchises in Las Vegas and Kansas City and there are fires to put out in some of…

PROSPECT WATCH

COLUMBUS THE COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS are seriously starved for high-end talent, past left winger Rick Nash and right winger Nikolai Zherdev. IN THE SPOT LIGHT But the wave of prospects set to reach the NHL in the next two to three years should change all that. Center Derick Brassard and right winger Jakub Voracek are both dynamic offensive players, who, under previous management, probably would have been in the NHL this season. Brassard, in his first pro season, was among the AHL’s leading scorers – with five goals and 20 points in 16 games – before he went down with a broken jaw. He’s expected back after Christmas. Voracek, the Jackets’ top pick last June, was dominating the QMJHL before he left to play for the Czech Republic at the World Junior Championship. Voracek has 16…
