CARELL COMES OUT OF HOCKEY
YOU PROBABLY KNOW STEVE CARELL from his days on The Daily Show, hit movies such as the 40-Year-Old Virgin and Little Miss Sunshine, and currently, as the star of NBC’s The Office. However, you’re probably unaware Carell is not only a hockey fan, but also a pretty good player. The 45-year-old Massachusetts native, whose new film Dan In Real Life opened Oct. 26, recently spoke to The Hockey News from Los Angeles. THE HOCKEY NEWS Let’s start off covering your background playing hockey, and how you stay connected to the sport today. STEVE CARELL I was a goalie in the Acton, Mass., youth hockey system, and I still get out and play in a rec league here on the West Coast. At this age, it’s nothing but constant injury. Just climbing over the boards…
ALWAYS ABLE, LUC NOW STABLE
AT TIMES LAST SEASON, Luc Bourdon had to wonder if he was playing hockey or modeling jerseys. About the time he became comfortable with one uniform, he was headed to another team. From the time training camp began until the playoffs ended, Bourdon played for five different teams and his roles differed greatly, depending on the level. In the NHL he was the unsure newcomer, trying not to get in the way. In junior, he was the dominant, puck-moving defenseman, responsible for carrying his team. That’s where his love for video games and the guitar came in handy. There were times he needed an escape. “Hockey’s fun and it’s your lifestyle, but you have to be able to get away, too,” Bourdon said. The Vancouver Canucks actually hope there will be little disruption in Bourdon’s…
CHANGING TACTICS
JOHAN HEDBERG’S DECISION TO CHARGE OUT AT MATS SUNDIN during the shootout portion of Atlanta’s eventual 5-4 win over Toronto angered the Maple Leafs captain. “If that was soccer, that would have been a goal,” said Sundin, who was bowled over on a play the officials ruled a legal pokecheck. “(Hedberg) took my feet out. I don’t know what the rule is in hockey.” Mats, it’s your lucky day. First, let’s remember shootouts are really nothing more than a series of penalty shots and according to section 25.4 of the NHL rulebook: “If, while the penalty shot is being taken, any…goalkeeper…shall have by some action interfered with or distracted the player taking the shot and, because of such action, the shot should have failed, a second attempt shall be permitted…” In other words,…
PLUS/MINUS
DID HELL FREEZE OVER? The Chicago Black-hawks are arranging to have (some of) their home games shown on TV. WELCOME MATS The Leafs are off to a slow start, but captain Mats Sundin is lighting it up like never before. A GOOD SIGN Rather than come out swinging, new NHLPA boss Paul Kelly wants to work with the NHL. FLUNKING CHEMISTRY The Rangers spent a ton of cash on free agents, but it hasn’t translated into early success. TEAM FOR SALE…CHEAP The ravaged Nashville Predators are rapidly becoming a wart on the NHL’s nose. PSST! THE SEASON’S ON Oilers veterans Ales Hemsky, Jarret Stoll and Marty Reasoner had no goals in nine games.…
