Wildcats loaded for title repeat
The University of Massachusetts Lowell is one of the charter members of Hockey East, dating back to 1984-85. And coach Blaise MacDonald is ecstatic the River Hawks will remain in Hockey East after the UMass board of trustees voted unanimously June 21 to keep the River Hawks in the league. Financial concerns led a task force to recommend UMass Lowell drop the program or leave Hockey East. But the university was able to renegotiate its Tsongas Arena contract with the city and that has allowed UML to remain in Hockey East. The new lease wiped out an annual $50,000 payment for the use of the facility and gave the school 100 percent of the concession revenues and 50 percent of the advertising revenues on the marquee outside the arena. “We’ve received a very strong commitment…

Prediction predicament
Picking a favorite in the CCHA has become an increasingly difficult task. In the past five years, four teams – Ferris State, Michigan (twice), Miami and Notre Dame – have won the CCHA regular season title. In last year’s pre-season poll, the Fighting Irish were picked by CCHA coaches to finish sixth, but led the league wire to wire. Michigan State was voted the favorite, ended up finishing fourth, but went on to win the NCAA tournament title. “You can take the polls and turn them sideways,” said Michigan State coach Rick Comley. “It’s great for our league.” Last year, Western Michigan took three of four games from Comley’s Spartans, last place Bowling Green beat Michigan on the road and Lake Superior State bounced the RedHawks from the playoffs. “Every game seems like a one-goal…

Hunt for games in October
HOCKEY FANS WHO SERIOUSLY NEED their fix by the time the calendar turns to October are going to have to wait another week for the start of the season in 2008. As first reported on thn.com, the NHL has decided to begin next season one week later, with opening night either Oct. 9 or 10, compared to Oct. 3 this season. There was actually significant pressure on the league from some of its American owners to push the start of the season back even further, but teams could not provide the league with enough available dates early in the season. Much of the reason for the later start is that U.S. owners find games in October an extremely difficult sell with Major League Baseball in the midst of its playoffs. All of this could…
