Kariya starts well
Martin Kariya was tearing up Finland and had signed a lucrative contract to play the 2007-08 season in Switzerland. “To be honest, I didn’t want to come back (to North America),” Kariya said, “unless I knew the situation with the coach.” Enter fate. After leading the Finnish League in scoring with the Espoo Blues, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound Kariya was invited to bring his blazing speed to Team Canada’s camp before the 2007 World Championship. While he played just one exhibition game and never dressed for the tournament, Kariya knew he’d someday want to play for coach Andy Murray.
