Top-heavy squad seeks added depth

The Thrashers went for the gusto in 2006-07, as GM Don Waddell added veterans Keith Tkachuk, Alexei Zhitnik and Pascal Dupuis at the trade deadline with the hope of securing a playoff berth for the first time in franchise history. The club did, in fact, make the post-season, but it came at an exorbitant price. To get Tkachuk out of St. Louis cost Waddell his first and third round picks in 2007, a second-rounder in 2008 and journeyman forward Glen Metropolit. It would have also cost a first-rounder in ’08, but the Thrashers decided not to re-sign Tkachuk. Unfortunately for Devils fans, the contract of Scott Gomez is also a goner. After registering 60 points and missing 10 games last season because of a…

Research In Motion businessman Jim Balsillie was expected to be the potential new owner until he started making overtures about moving the team out of Tennessee and closer to his home in southern Ontario. The NHL resisted and before long another potential owner stepped forward. Then a local group said it would buy the team and keep it in Nashville. Then Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman) mentioned a group of buyers in Florida were interested… Well, not really. The last one is a fib, but you get the picture. What we do know is the Predators are in Nashville this season for sure. The budget has been cut extensively,…

Driving to Net for big action

As the summer months rolled through North America, boys and girls of all ages hit the pools across Canada and the U.S. Now September, however, a different type of pool is the object of pursuit for thousands of hockey fans, as fantasy drafts are kicking off in cities and towns. Office pool, beer league draft and special challenge invites will pop up, hitting e-mail in-boxes with the frequency of a Nigerian prince’s claim of a million dollar inheritance. While several of these drafts will involve a meeting between friends or business cohorts in dens or board rooms, countless others will instead happen in chat rooms or on message boards. Indeed, the virtual scene of a heated draft has become just as popular as the face-to-face confrontations. One of the advantages of playing in…
