Buyer beware: risk management
KNOWING WHO TO pick is half the battle in every fantasy hockey draft. Knowing who to avoid? Now that’s a different story. Below is our guide of which players may pan out next year, but might not be worth the risk in your pool’s draft. ANAHEIM Todd Bertuzzi – Injury bug a concern; if healthy, scoring an issue. ATLANTA Alexei Zhitnik – Scoring binge after deadline is surely a mirage. BOSTON Brandon Bochenski – Can he light up the scoreboard in the NHL? BUFFALO Tim Connolly – Missed two of the past three NHL seasons. CALGARY Craig Conroy – OK if he plays with Iginla, otherwise… CAROLINA Frantisek Kaberle – One good point season, many injury-plagued seasons. CHICAGO Sergei Samsonov – Fresh starts haven’t done him any good yet. COLORADO Jose Theodore – Avs won’t be patient with goaltending. COLUMBUS Nikolai Zherdev – Big talent, small work ethic…

McCabe produced 54 points last year – 10th among defensemen – but was criticized for his defensive game (not that poolies care beyond the plus/minus hit). The most common thing poolies look at in selecting players is last year’s production. But maybe they should also look at a list of players in their final season before becoming an unrestricted free agent. There’s a belief out…

Plucky blueline leads the Blues
The Blues enter Year 2 under president John Davidson with plenty of optimism. Most of it centers on the team’s impressive cast of defensemen. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 draft, Erik Johnson, will debut along the St. Louis blueline. He joins veteran Eric Brewer, Barret Jackman and Christian Backman to form an outstanding top four. They are joined by shutdown vet Jay McKee, promising Jeff Woywitka and solid role players Bryce Salvador and Matt Walker to form one of the deepest defense corps in the NHL. The Blues will need them to perform, since the team’s offense and goaltending are issues. Brad Boyes, acquired from Boston for defenseman Dennis Wideman last season, is an important piece to the puzzle up front, while European import Martin Kariya – a top scorer…
