Preissing change benefits attack
SURPRISE SCORER Defenseman Tom Preissing wasn’t a big scorer in the regular season, but he has stepped up in the playoffs. While the line of Jason Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley have carried the offensive load, it was Preissing who scored the winner in a 2-0 victory over New Jersey in what was a balance-tipping Game 4 win at Scotiabank Place. The key has been the decision by coach Bryan Murray to put Preissing in situations where he can be successful. It worked like a charm in the first two rounds of the playoffs. FOR THE DEFENSE Chris Phillips and Anton Volchenkov both signed new contracts before the playoffs and nobody is questioning why the Sens want to keep these two in the fold. An NHL coach said they might…

FireAntz boss jumps to Pensacola cockpit
John Marks spent little time sipping from the President’s Cup after coaching the Fayetteville FireAntz to the league title. Shortly after winning, he was hired as coach of the Pensacola Ice Pilots, moving up a rung on the pro hockey ladder. Marks will need to rebuild the ECHL team and intends to give several FireAntz – namely MVP Robert Sich, rookie of the year Tim Velemirovich and Marc Norrington – a chance to make the team. Marks, 59, is a 13-year ECHL veteran who needs 15 wins to pass John Brophy (480) to become the winningest coach in league history. The dream of one day standing behind an NHL bench still burns in Marks. “I just plug away and do the best I can,” he said. “Hopefully, somebody will notice.”…

No Iggy, no problem as Flames blazed
DEFINING MOMENT Losing Jarome Iginla for nearly a month with a knee injury had all the makings of a disaster. Instead, the Flames put together an outstanding record to solidify a playoff spot. Iginla went down Jan. 4 against Florida. Calgary fell behind, rebounded to win in overtime and went on a 7-2-2 run without its captain, who was on pace for a career season. No longer could the Flames be known as ‘Iginla and the Faceless Grinders.’ Led by Daymond Langkow and Kristian Huselius, they put together a season-saving performance that later sputtered in the playoffs. READY FOR ’07-08 Finally, the Flames will add a handful of young players from the AHL and none are better prepared than center Andrei Taratukhin. The 24-year-old had 60 points in his first North…

Bochenski remedy for right wing woes
DEFINING MOMENT Three games above .500 (34-31-5) and still in the playoff race, the Bruins visited the Rangers – a team they needed to pass – and “looked slow, weak, soft and intimidated” (coach Dave Lewis) in a 7-0 loss March 17. Boston collapsed in all facets in the second period, allowing a season-worst six goals. The Bruins never recovered. The defeat was the first of five in a row – three in which they were shut out – and began a season-ending chain of futility (1-10-1). READY FOR ’07-08 Right winger Brandon Bochenski, unable to win a job in Chicago despite 33 goals in 35 games at Norfolk (AHL), scored 11 goals and 22 points in 31 games after the Bruins obtained him for minor league right winger Kris Versteeg.…
