IT’S TIME TO CHANGE THINGS UP

BARRING AN UNFORESEEN SWING in fortunes, the order of playoff teams in the Central Division was already set by mid-March. The Winnipeg Jets had a nice little cushion as the No. 1 seed, while injuries to Minnesota and reinforcements in Colorado and Dallas meant that the Avalanche and Stars were close to a lock as first-round playoff opponents. That’s right: two of the biggest winners of the NHL trade deadline were on an early collision course. The fact that Mikko Rantanen is now a member of the Stars instead of the Avs makes the matchup delicious, but it would also rob the field of a legit Stanley Cup contender in the first round. The same can be said in the Atlantic Division, where one of Florida, Toronto or Tampa Bay is…

‘IT WASN’T MY TIME’

EVERYONE HAS DATES IN their history that mark life-changing moments, be they for the better or worse. For some, it can be that first kiss, a straight-A report card, or, on the flip side, missing the final cut of an eventual championship sports team. I’ve had many positive experiences in my existence. It would be difficult to pick out just one. But on the negative side, one split second in time stands out beyond all the rest – one that took place early on the fateful morning of Sept. 3, 2015. BADGER BOUNTY

WHEN CENTER CASEY O’Brien stepped on the campus at the University of Wisconsin in 2020, there was no guarantee she’d get to start – never mind finish – her rookie season. NCAA hockey had been through the stops and starts of the pandemic, and the risk loomed that any given game could be the last. Fast-forward five seasons, and there are now certainties for O’Brien and her team. She will leave the powerhouse WCHA program as one of the all-time greats, and the Badgers have added multiple national titles in one of the most dominant eras in program history. O’Brien has played her way into the company of Wisconsin’s legendary list of alumni. This season, one by one, she passed Meghan Duggan, Brianna Decker and Hilary Knight to become Wisconsin’s all-time leading…

WASHINGTON CAPITALS

POWER RANKING | 9TH WHAT FELT LIKE a season with only one purpose – get Alex Ovechkin the all-time goals record – quickly became multi-pronged when Washington bucked outside expectations by going on a campaign-long heater. Simply put, the Capitals have been one of the NHL’s best teams, and they have the statistics to back it up. Top offense? Check. Top three in goals against? Check. Top 10 on both the power play and penalty kill? You better believe that’s a check. The only stat that dings the Caps a little is expected goals percentage, where they rank just 13th – but even there, it’s not like the team is bottom of the barrel. The most impressive aspect of the Capitals this season has been the work done by the front office. The…
