LOS ANGELES KINGS

POWER RANKING | 11TH LOS ANGELES KNOWS the road to Stanley Cup success literally runs through Edmonton. The Kings have lost three consecutive first-round playoff series to the Oilers, and they’re fairly certain another springtime matchup is on the horizon, whether it’s in the first or second round. To that end, the Kings beefed up their blueline with the off-season acquisition of Joel Edmundson to make life harder for Edmonton’s skilled forwards. Drew Doughty missed the first 47 games of the season and will likely have found the fine balance between being rested and in mid-season form. And goalie Darcy Kuemper has regained his stellar form since coming over from Washington. He was tied for second in save percentage among goalies with at least 30 starts. Even if things seem more solid on…

Nikolaj Ehlers

FLYING UNDER THE RADAR

NIKOLAJ EHLERS DOESN’T OWN a fur coat. In fairness, who does these days? But that this even arises in conversation with the Winnipeg Jets winger has little do with Ehlers expressing his sartorial wants or needs. It doesn’t even have anything to do with bundling up when the mercury starts to dip in Winnipeg and Ehlers has to fend off the bitter, blustery and blistering cold. Rather, the gap in Ehlers’ closet comes up because he’s daydreaming, envisioning “probably the wildest Stanley Cup party you’ll ever see.” That’s when one of the most iconic photos in Winnipeg’s sports history comes up. The snapshot dates back to 2019, not long after the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers won their first Grey Cup since 1990. It was at the parade that Chris Streveler arrived decked…

THE ALL-TIME NO-FINAL TEAM

THERE ARE PLENTY OF lists of the best players to never win a Stanley Cup, but many of those players – such as Joe Thornton, Jarome Iginla, Henrik Lundqvist and Roberto Luongo – had their hopes of a Cup ring dashed in the final. For this roster, we’re looking at players who suffered even more heartbreak. Lose in a conference final or two? Welcome to the all-time no-Cup-final team. Never even make it that far? We might have a spot for you, too. First, some guidelines. This lineup is composed of a center, left winger, right winger, two defensemen and a goalie. It adheres strictly to positions as listed on NHL.com. So there are no centers shifted to the wing here. Also, we’re only considering retired players. There’s no Auston Matthews, Mitch…

Prince Of Wales

A PRINCE OF A TROPHY

IN 1938, EDWARD VIII, the former Prince of Wales, publicly congratulated the NHL’s Boston Bruins on winning the Prince of Wales Trophy, which he had donated nearly a decade-and-a-half earlier, for the only time on record. Two years earlier, the entire British Empire listened with bated breath as King Edward VIII told his subjects that he could not be their king without the support of the woman he loved. He was thus abdicating the throne, and he would become the Duke of Windsor the following year. ‘The Abdication,’ like ‘The Cup,’ is self-explanatory. Royalty, like sports, is, if nothing else, theater. The Royal Family attempted to erase Edward, now a failed king remembered as the charismatic Prince of Wales, from history so the new reticent king might step out of his…
