Sam Bennett

BOOM BOOM BENNETT

SHOULD YOU NEED A primer on how to win a playoff series these days, taking a look at the Florida Panthers is a pretty good place to start. No team has played in as many series as the Cats have over the past two post-seasons, as they went from finalists to champions year over year. And when you play against the Panthers, you do not expect an easy series. They are big. They are hard. They are skilled. And they work. They are Sam Bennett. And if his contributions at the 4 Nations Face-Off are any indication, Bennett continues to play every shift as if the fate of the world is hanging in the balance. “He’s what everyone wants on their team and hates to play against,” said teammate Sam…

ICE CAPADES A SHORE THING?

TYPICALLY, WHEN ONE thinks about Eddie Shore, they think about hockey’s greatest tough guy. Nicknamed ‘Old Blood and Guts,’ the legendary Boston Bruins defenseman spilled plenty of both during his Hall of Fame career. But it turns out that Shore’s name is also strongly associated with a winter pastime other than hockey. Shore was one of the founders of Ice Capades, the touring extravaganza that featured well-known international figure skaters, choreographed on-ice routines, chorus lines of skaters and costumed characters galore. In the troupe’s early years, many reporters called Ice Capades the “Rockettes on skates.” This was a rather on-the-nose descriptor, especially since longtime Rockettes producer Russell Markert served as Ice Capades’ first creative director. As his NHL career wound down, Shore purchased the moribund Springfield Indians franchise from the AHL in…

PWHL

MOVING ON UP

WHEN THE BOSTON FLEET made Shay Maloney their sixth-round pick in the 2024 PWHL draft, it was far from a guarantee she would earn a roster spot – with few roles available in a six-team league awash with talent. But as she entered the second half of 2024-25, Maloney was defying the odds. The 25-year-old rookie center knew the deck was stacked against her, but it was hard to miss Maloney this pre-season, as she was seemingly hitting everything that moved. When Maloney talks about the physical side of her game, she can’t help but smile and laugh. It’s a part of the sport she loves. “I’ve always been that kind of gritty type of player,” Maloney said. “I have a big body, and it plays to my strengths in that…

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

POWER RANKING | 10TH JUST WHEN YOU thought the Lightning would go quietly into the night, they’ve roared back into elite status. Most figured Tampa Bay would falter after losing its captain and franchise player, but putting some of the band back together and seeing a couple others find their previous form has worked wonders. If you asked NHL teams if they would want to face the Lightning in the first round of the playoffs, you’d get a bunch of them backing into a hedge the way Homer Simpson does in that popular meme. The Lightning are back, baby, and they are once again doing Lightning-type things. And the way they came out of the gate after the 4 Nations break served notice to the rest of the league that reports of…
