Malkin makes his points
EVGENI MALKIN’S SHOULDER injury in training camp might prevent him from usurping both Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby as one of the most productive young rookies in NHL history. Malkin, 20, will likely have a difficult time posting better point totals than Ovechkin’s 106 or Crosby’s 102 from last season. But through the all-star break, Malkin was every bit their equal during his rookie campaign. In his first 42 games this season, Malkin had 24 goals and 52 points, which put him on pace for a 97-point season. In their first 42 games last season, Crosby had 21 goals and 48 points, while Ovechkin had 26 goals and 52 points. But Malkin, who missed the first four games this season after injuring his shoulder in the preseason, will play a maximum of 78…

Langkow on fire in Cowtown
To his teammates, he’s known as ‘Langks.’ To To defenseman Robyn Regehr, however, Calgary Flames center Daymond Langkow deserves a different moniker. “He’s pretty grouchy,” said Regehr as a wide grin came to his face. “Pretty often, too. I’m trying to figure out why. He’s playing pretty well and things seem to be going well for him, but still he’s Oscar the Grouch.” Getting older can often make one more cantankerous, but that’s not all age can do. With Langkow it’s making him better. A model of consistency for what seems an eternity in pro sports, garnering 50 to 62 points in each of the past six seasons, the 30-year-old native of Edmonton is on his way to obliterating his career-highs this year. Through 47 games, he had 19 goals and 50 points. That’s a…
Western howls blast schedule
The Stars were disappointed when the NHL’s board of governors were one vote short of changing the schedule. “The teams in the Northeast (region) like playing teams in the Northeast and that’s disappointing,” said Dallas owner Tom Hicks. “It’s the same people. It’s the Northeast against the rest of us.” President Jim Lites added: “The fact there are guys voting without conscience, in my opinion, based totally on their own personal circumstances, suggests to me parochial decisions are being made, and that’s a significant problem.” Colorado captain Joe Sakic was outspoken on the subject as well. “Eight games in a division is too much,” he said. “Slim that down to six and add more games from the East and it’d be nice. I think it’d be better for the league…
