Building a winner
Not all that long ago, the recipe for building a championship team was simple enough to print on every season ticket form. Draft well. Stir in one or two good trades. Wait five years for the mixture to mold into a winner. The New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers both followed those directions and together they produced nine championship teams over 11 seasons from 1980 to 1990. “It is totally different now,” said Red Wings executive vice-president Jim Devellano, whose scouting acumen helped the Islanders draft the likes of Mike Bossy, Bryan Trottier, Denis Potvin and Clarke Gillies in the 1970s. “When I first came into the league there were 17 teams, and then there were 21.
