Next step for Sharks is high side of .500

The San Jose Sharks took a positive step in 1999-2000, making the second round of the playoffs for the first time in three tries. But for the ninth straight year, San Jose failed to register a winning regular season. On the bright side, according to GM Dean Lombardi’s in-house research, San Jose became just the seventh team since 1950 to improve its regular season point total four years in a row. Since finishing with a woeful 47 points in 1995-96, the Sharks have earned 62, 78, 80 and 87 points. “What they have accomplished is something we can be proud of,” Lombardi said. “But there’s only one team that made it to five.” The New York Islanders actually made it six straight seasons of improvement from 1972-73 through 1978-79. Now the team is at a crossroads. Ramsay begins his first season as the man…

The Canes, already short on depth, were unable to sign their key unrestricted free agents. Defenseman Sean Hill laughed at Carolina’s two-year, $6-million offer and signed a four-year, $9-million pact with St. Louis. And 13-year left winger Gary Roberts, the Canes’ heart and soul, signed a three-year, $8-million contract with Toronto. Future Hall of Fame defenseman Paul Coffey, deemed expendable after the acquisition of Sandis Ozolinsh, bolted for Boston. For the Canes to avoid a third nonplay-off season in their four years in North Carolina, youngsters such as defensemen David Tanabe and Niclas Wallin, goalie Jean-Marc Pelletier and forwards…
