Bourque-less B's hope for good health

In 1996-97, the Boston Bruins’ first failure in 30 years to qualify for the playoffs resulted in coach Steve Kasper losing his job and a complete overhaul of the on-ice operation. In 1999-2000, the Bruins’ second failure to qualify in four years didn’t result in anything quite so drastic, but changes are definitely on the horizon. Pat Burns, who faces his own issues (some questioned whether he’d be back for the fourth and final year of his contract), will be the first Boston coach since Don Cherry in 1978 to start a season without Ray Bourque on the blueline. Though Boston promised to seek defensive help in the free agent market, there is no way a newcomer or two could do everything Bourque did from 1979-80 until the club granted its dejected…

Punishing defense hides scoring woes

At the end of last October, the Washington Capitals were 14th in the 15-team Eastern Conference. But by the time the season had ended, the club had won the Southeast Division, battling Philadelphia to the final weekend for the conference championship. “And I think we’re in better shape now than we were a year ago,” said GM George Mc-Phee. “The previous year was difficult for everybody-we missed the playoffs after going to the final the season before. That was a real kick in the stomach and it shook the confidence of a lot of people. “We came back, made a few additions and had an extraordinary year. I think this season we will be just as competitive, but we’ll have more depth to rely on than we’ve had in a long time.…
