Weary Stars remain in thick of things

The way Ken Hitchcock sees it, two months is plenty of time to rest. The Dallas Stars’ coach said his team was in dire need of a break at the end of the playoffs in June. “We just all need to get away for a while and have some time off, some time to ourselves,” Hitchcock said after losing the Stanley Cup final in triple overtime in Game 6 to the New Jersey Devils. “It has just been a really long two years and I think we probably need the break more than anyone.” No team has played more games than the Stars in the past three years and the 1999-2000 season showed just what a toll it took on them. The Stars had 395 man-games lost tc injury during the regular season…

Ready for invitation to post-season party

After four years in the non-playoff wilderness, the Vancouver Canucks seem poised to become legitimate postseason contenders. Vancouver’s finish to the 1999-2000 campaign-15-10-5 against extremely tough competition-and a 25-point improvement has left the organization bubbling with optimism. GM Brian Burke and coach Marc Crawford are satisfied they finally have a No. 1 goalie in Felix Potvin, their top six defensemen are returning and the Sedin twins are ready to begin their big league careers. These developments, coupled with promising forwards Brendan Morrison, Peter Schaefer, Harold Druken, Matt Cooke and Josh Holden and the emergence last season of Todd Bertuzzi as an NHL scorer, are also fuelling the optimistic outlook. The Canucks’ biggest problem will likely be leadership with Mark Messier gone and character players Brad May and Garth Snow also having moved on.…

Is mix of young and old right recipe for playoffs?

Their “new” goaltender, 37-year-old Mike Vernon, should fit in nicely with a Calgary Flames’ team that junked its ‘Young Guns’ marketing campaign in favor of a new motto: ‘Win Now!’ The reality is the Flames played only a handful of youngsters in the second half of last season. Two of their blue chip prospects on defense, Robyn Regehr and Derek Morris, were supplemented by a large group of veterans. Phil Housley, Brad Werenka, Darryl Shannon and Bobby Dollas are all over 30, but they rounded out the top six after injuries prematurely ended the seasons of Denis Gauthier, another good young defensen-man, and elder statesmen Tommy Albelin and Steve Smith. Up front, the only regulars with three or fewer years of experience were Marc Savard, Clarke Wilm and Martin St. Louis. After four…
