SAN JOSE SHARKS

The San Jose Sharks were the worst second-year team in league history last season. It was truly a season of turmoil on and off the ice. The three-headed management team of George Kingston, Dean Lombardi and Chuck Grillo was a disaster that resulted in Kingston’s firing at season’s end. Kevin Constantine takes over as coach and Lombardi and Grillo have more defined roles. The Sharks slipped from 17 wins and 39 points in 1991-92 to just 11 victories and 24 points. In their defense, they were bitten by the injury bug, losing young guns Pat Fal-loon and Sandis Ozolinsh. 1992-93 record: 11-71-2, last in Smythe, 23rd overall, missed playoffs. Three pivotal factors: 1. Offensive production. Only the expansion Ottawa Senators scored fewer goals than the Sharks’ total of 218. Falloon was being counted on for…

QUEBEC NORDIQUES

No team in NHL history made greater strides in one season than the 1992-93 Quebec Nordiques. But their first playoff in six years was a disaster. Despite improving by an NHL-record 52 points over the previous season and going from second-last to fourth-best overall, they were beaten in the first round of the playoffs by the Montreal Canadiens. That was after taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. The Nordiques hope they can sign free agent Swede Peter Forsberg, obtained in the Eric Lindros trade. If he signs with another team, the Nordiques would be entitled to compensation. 1992-93 record: 47-27-10, second in Adams, fourth overall, lost division semifinal 4-2 to Montreal Canadiens. Three pivotal factors: 1. Learning from last season’s playoff failure. In the series against Montreal, the Nordiques tried to…

BUFFALO SABRES

It was tough getting an accurate reau on me Buffalo Sabres last season. They looked terrible down the stretch, then won their first playoff series in 10 years with a four-game sweep, then lost in four straight games to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens. Where does that leave them? Are the Sabres ready to enter the league’s upper echelon or are they doomed to another season of mediocrity? There is reason to suggest the Sabres are indeed inching closer to being a serious contender with both size and speed up front. The downside is they are terribly shallow on defense and there are nagging doubts about goalie Grant Fuhr’s ability and durability. 1992-93 record: 38-36-10, fourth in Adams, 15th overall, lost division final 4-0 to Montreal Canadiens. Three pivotal factors: 1. Alexander…
