THERE ARE 500 PLAYERS IN THE NHL: HERE ARE THE BEST 25

Only one question had to be asked about each player listed on The Hockey News’ top 25 list: How well does he play? This is a celebration of what is, not what has been or what someday might be. This is a list for those who believe “potential” is the Latin word for “He hasn’t done a darn thing.” This is a salute to what happens on ice, not what occurs away from it. When we consulted a panel of NHL general managers about the top 25 players in the NHL, we didn’t ask or care what their salaries are, how many years are left on their contracts, or how old they are. We didn’t need to know whether they are active in the community or a good influence in the dressing…

HOCKEY’S YOUNG & RESTLESS

Just who started this ridiculous I rumor, anyway? You know the one. It’s the one that suggests Canada has lost its own game. Skeptics will have you believe it, but don’t listen to them. They’ll point to the 1992 entry draft, they’ll tell you that in the last 10 years participation has gone down by about 80,000 in Canadian amateur hockey. They’ll sit you in front of a TV and show you hundreds of unbelievable goals by guys with names such as Selanne, Mogilny and Bure. Then they’ll go on a tirade about how Canadian kids are poorly coached, that they play three games for every practice and that the total commitment that hockey requires is causing 14-and 15-year-olds to leave the game in alarming numbers. None of that means a thing. What…

BUFFALO SABRES

It was tough getting an accurate reau on me Buffalo Sabres last season. They looked terrible down the stretch, then won their first playoff series in 10 years with a four-game sweep, then lost in four straight games to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens. Where does that leave them? Are the Sabres ready to enter the league’s upper echelon or are they doomed to another season of mediocrity? There is reason to suggest the Sabres are indeed inching closer to being a serious contender with both size and speed up front. The downside is they are terribly shallow on defense and there are nagging doubts about goalie Grant Fuhr’s ability and durability. 1992-93 record: 38-36-10, fourth in Adams, 15th overall, lost division final 4-0 to Montreal Canadiens. Three pivotal factors: 1. Alexander…

SOUTHERN EXPOSURE

Not since the Civil War has there been such an organized invasion of the Deep South of the United States. The NHL’s addition of expansion franchises in Miami and Anaheim and the relocation of the Stars from Minnesota to Dallas completes the ushering in of a new era. If the NHL’s 1967 bulge from six to 12 teams was known as the Great Expansion, the league’s current era may best be deemed the Sun Belt Expansion. Before the latest round of expansion that has witnessed four cities-San Jose. Tanina Bay, Miami and Anaheim-south of the 40th parallel get NHL teams, the league had little southern exposure. It had one team located south of Washington, D.C., and only three teams west of Chicago in the U.S. The league has been burned before by moving into warm-weather…
