HIGH IQ Meet the NHL’s tough & talented

Friends call me a pacifist. Foes call me a coward. Brian Burke calls me a card-carrying member of the burgeoning NHL Greenpeace movement. He is right. I’m in favor of saving the Whalers. But what I’m opposed to is fighting in hockey. That viewpoint has brought me to blows (figuratively) with everyone from John Ziegler to Don Cherry to Burke, the Hartford Whalers’ GM. Burke and I have waged our battle over the phone, overseas (in Sweden, naturally) and over refreshments. So, it was natural that I turn to the former minor-league tough guy for an expert’s opinion on a new statistic developed by The Hockey News-the Intimidation Quotient. It represents a comparative measure of players who supply physical play and finesse. Guts and goals. “These guys are the bread-and-butter of your lineup,” Burke says.…

SAN JOSE SHARKS

The San Jose Sharks were the worst second-year team in league history last season. It was truly a season of turmoil on and off the ice. The three-headed management team of George Kingston, Dean Lombardi and Chuck Grillo was a disaster that resulted in Kingston’s firing at season’s end. In their defense, they were bitten by the injury bug, losing young guns Pat Fal-loon and Sandis Ozolinsh. 1992-93 record: 11-71-2, last in Smythe, 23rd overall, missed playoffs. Three pivotal factors: 1. Offensive production. Only the expansion Ottawa Senators scored fewer goals than the Sharks’ total of 218. Falloon was being counted on for…

HOCKEY’S YOUNG & RESTLESS

Just who started this ridiculous I rumor, anyway? You know the one. It’s the one that suggests Canada has lost its own game. Skeptics will have you believe it, but don’t listen to them. They’ll point to the 1992 entry draft, they’ll tell you that in the last 10 years participation has gone down by about 80,000 in Canadian amateur hockey. They’ll sit you in front of a TV and show you hundreds of unbelievable goals by guys with names such as Selanne, Mogilny and Bure. Then they’ll go on a tirade about how Canadian kids are poorly coached, that they play three games for every practice and that the total commitment that hockey requires is causing 14-and 15-year-olds to leave the game in alarming numbers. None of that means a thing. What…
