BOSTON BRUINS

The trail to the Stanley Cup came to an unexpected and abrupt end for the Boston Bruins last season. The Wales Conference finalists the last three seasons were beached in an embarrassing first-round sweep by the Buffalo Sabres. It was the Sabres’ first playoff series victory in 10 years. The Bruins are the NHL’s model of consistency, with 26 consecutive seasons in the playoffs and a plus-.500 record. But they have shown the same consistency in losing Stanley Cups. They haven’t won since 1972. Time is running out for Ray Bourque to win the big prize. If the veteran is to help Boston win the Cup, it will have to be soon. 1992-93 record: 51-26-7, first in Adams, second overall, lost division semifinal 4-0 to Buffalo Sabres. Three pivotal factors: 1. Cam Neely’s health. Neely…

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

The San Jose Sharks proved in 1992-93 that a promising debut season doesn’t always guarantee success in the second year. That is exactly what the Tampa Bay Lightning are up against this season. The expansion Lightning recorded 23 victo-ries-11 on the road-and 53 points a year ago. But like other expansion teams, reality may set in this time around. Of the 14 expansion teams that recorded at least 35 points in their first seasons, 10 of them experienced dropoffs in the second. Lightning general manager Phil Esposito has made some positive off-season moves, so now all he has to do is find his team a permanent place to play. 1992-93 record: 23-54-7, sixth in Norris, 22nd overall, missed playoffs. Three pivotal factors: 1. Special teams. Because it lacked offensive talent, the expansion Lightning was 20th…

HOCKEY’S YOUNG & RESTLESS

Just who started this ridiculous I rumor, anyway? You know the one. It’s the one that suggests Canada has lost its own game. Skeptics will have you believe it, but don’t listen to them. They’ll point to the 1992 entry draft, they’ll tell you that in the last 10 years participation has gone down by about 80,000 in Canadian amateur hockey. They’ll sit you in front of a TV and show you hundreds of unbelievable goals by guys with names such as Selanne, Mogilny and Bure. Then they’ll go on a tirade about how Canadian kids are poorly coached, that they play three games for every practice and that the total commitment that hockey requires is causing 14-and 15-year-olds to leave the game in alarming numbers. None of that means a thing. What…

CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS

The Chicago Blackhawks recorded the third best regular season of any NHL team a year ago, but they entered the post-season as the lowest-scoring team in the playoffs. It killed them. They were swept by the St. Louis Blues in the first round. They scored six goals and were shut out twice. Blues’ goalie Curtis Joseph was spectacular, but the sweep further illustrated the Blackhawks’ desperate need for more scoring punch. With Vezina Trophy winner Ed Belfour in goal and Norris Trophy winner Chris Che-lios on defense, the Blackhawks are set behind the blueline. And center Jeremy Roenick is among the best at his position. It’s the supporting cast that needs help. 1992-93 record: 47-25-12, first in Norris, third overall, lost division semifinal 4-0 to St. Louis Blues. Three pivotal factors: 1. Offensive depth.…
