Vancouver Canucks:

When you finish in third place and out of the playoffs in the Smythe Division you keep your eyes and ears open for good deals to help improve your hockey club. Even before Vancouver Canucks' general manager Jake Milford had hired coach Harry Neale from the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association, he was busily assembling a cast which would have a good chance of finishing the season with a better record than the 20-47-13 turned in by Vancouver in 1977-78. Milford picked up the candidates for the 1978-79 Canucks from all over the place. From the WHA. from a rival NHL. team, from Europe and from the amateur draft, and suddenly the Canucks don't look like a team which finished 12th in goals scored with 239 and 13th in…

Atlanta Flames:

Round and round the Atlanta Flames go. They get a little younger each year, a little better, but then comes the playoffs and their season quickly comes to a grinding halt. What gives? They’ve played in four series (three preliminary rounds and one quarter-final) and they’ve won a grand total of one game. And this year, they'll be…

Toronto Maple Leafs:

This could be the year the Toronto Maple Leafs make great strides to move out of third place in the tough Adams Division, moving past Buffalo and taking on Boston, or it might be the year when they slip back into the oblivion of a middle-of-the-pack club, destined to remain an also-ran. Two factors will contribute heavily to the success of the 1978-79 Maple Leafs. The status of All Star defenseman Borje Salming's eye, which was injured in the playoffs, and the ability of Leaf coach Roger Neilson to keep his team following his basic fundamentals towards improvement. Neilson’s first objective when he took over the Leafs last year was to reduce the goals against to 240, an average of three per game. This seemed a tall order considering that the club…
