EUROPEAN REPORT
The Czechs finally beat the Russians as did the Swedes and the Poles in the 1 9 7 6 World Tournament. The Czechs captured their first World title since 1949—and even the Soviet Union’s victory in the 19 76 Winter Olympics was tarnished by a disallowed Czech goal in an uphill 4—3 Soviet win. With the Olympic competition having been staged in February, without Sweden, most European fans discounted the result and counted the Worlds played in April. The cheese became more binding when the Winnipeg Jets, staffed mostly with Swedish and Finnish players, captured the Avco Cup emblematic of the World Hockey Association championship. But the. blame is misplaced when heaped on the shoulders of veteran Gerry Desjardins, for indeed the true villain is General Manager Punch Imlach. There can be little doubt. Though it was Desjardins whose frequent clumsiness was a measurable factor in the final series loss to Philadelphia two years ago and the semifinal debacle against the Islanders last April, it is Imlach who must take responsibility for not obtaining sufficient net strength for a team that otherwise has everything needed for true championship contention. The offensive power can not be questioned: Gilbert Perreault scored 44 goals and totaled 113 points—third-best in the league;…
