SOLVING MYSTERY OF KING McCOURT

The 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee series includes a card of Dale McCourt in a Los Angeles Kings’ uniform, a team he never played for. The 198081 O-Pee-Chee series has a card of Doug Risebrough which is clearly Serge Savard. Are these cards valuable collectors’ items? Paul Foote St. John’s, Nfld. Since both cards are uncorrected errors, the are not particularity valuable. Both cards are considered commons and worth no more than a quarter in near-mint condition. McCourt’s photo was airbrushed to put him in a Kings’ uniform because he was awarded to Los Angeles as compensation for Detroit’s signing of free agent Marcel Dionne. Both were invited to return to a pretournament training camp last December. And when it became obvious they had both made the team, they spent practices trying to outshine each other. GEORGE BRETT

Hobbies for professional athletes can be dangerous. Look where football, for example, got Bo Jackson. George Brett’s hobby is not as hazardous as that of Jackson, his former Kansas City Royals’ teammate. All Brett has to do to indulge is flip on his fax machine, take the Mercedes for a spin or hop on a jetliner. At any of those moments, Brett is transported to his sidelight as part-owner of the Western League and Memorial Cup champion Spokane Chiefs. Among a nine-man ownership group, Brett and his brother Bobby hold the controlling interest. For Bobby, the active owner, it’s a labor of love. He’s the Chiefs’ governor, their hands-on guy. For George, it’s just pure fun. “I get to enjoy it while Bobby has to work at it,” Brett said. “I don’t make any of…
