GRETZKY TOPS HIGH-PROFILE JERSEY, STICK MARKET
St. Louis Blues’ right winger Brett Hull may have supplanted Los Angeles Kings’ center Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s highest-profile player this season, but the Great One still dominates the collectible industry s highest-profile market—autographed sticks and jerseys. ‘‘Wayne definitely sells more overall, but Brett is a streaky seller,” says Ken Goldin, executive vice-president of The Scoreboard Inc., in Cherry Hill, N.J. ‘‘One day he’ll appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated and the next day we’ll have a big run on Hull merchandise. Gretzky? Well, Gretzky’s Gretzky. He’s consistent.” Scoreboard sells an autographed Gretzky jersey for $449 U.S., while the Golden Brett’s jersey sells for $299 U.S. Gretzky’s autographed Easton aluminum stick tops Hull’s shiny weapon. $195 U.S. to $129 U.S. In general, autographed jerseys run from between about $150 U.S. and…

The results are in and Upper Deck is the big winner in the first THN Collectors World Reader Poll. Upper Deck easily got the nod as Best Set and the Mario Gosselin Upper Deck card was the reader’s choice for Best Card. Here are the results, along with some of your comments to the hockey card companies regarding what you would like them to do next season. While hockey cards remained hot in the off-season last year—and probably will this year—there is usually very little dramatic fluctuation in popular hockey card prices. Between the begining of June to the middle of September, card collectors tend to have a ‘What have you done for me lately?’ attitude and barring off-ice controversy, most players remain out of the spotlight. With that in mind, most player cards should for the most part remain on the Power Play or in the Box until training camp next year. Here are some items to ponder over and some bold—and not…
HOCKEY FAILS TO BIND DISTANT COUSINS
When Darren Van Impe and the Prince Albert Raiders get down to playing hockey, please don’t bother the Van Impe clan. If Dennis, Diane, Rich or the rest of them aren’t on the road visiting one of five Western League cities in Saskatchewan where Darren is playing that night, the only person they want to listen to is Kevin Winters, the play-by-play voice of the Raiders. “Now’s not a great time to call,” said Dennis, the father of Darren, from his Saskatoon home early in the WHL playoffs. “This is it for the Raiders. If they don’t win tonight the season is over. Darren has to get something going.” On the other side of the continent, Ed Van Impe goes about his business as an insurance broker in Philadelphia, not really following the…
