GRETZKY TAKES MEASURES TO SINK PIRATES

Wayne Gretzky is picky when it comes to signing his name to things. He’s not being a snob, he’s just doing it for the good of collectors and collectibles. Gretzky and Brett Hull recently signed a contract with The Scoreboard Inc., of New Jersey to ensure the authenticity of memorabilia on an exclusive basis. So the next time you purchase a Gretzky or Hull-signed gift, if you can’t trace it back to Scoreboard, it may not be legitimate. The purpose of such a deal is to shipwreck the increasing number of pirates, so to speak. “There is more and more bogus Gretzky merchandise on the market,” said Michael Barnett, Gretzky’s agent. “On any given day, we’re investigating five to 10 projects using his name and image without approval.” With the increasing demand of authentic…

Playing every other game for the Patrick Division-leading New York Rangers, Mike Richter led the NHL in save percentage (.911 as of March 6), while also ranking in the top 10 in goals-against average (2.95) and winning percentage (.636). Yet, even though he plays in the media capital of the world, Richter has yet to receive anywhere near the publicity Belfour has. The main reason is because while Belfour has played nearly every game, Richter alternates with veteran John Vanbiesbrouck. But that shouldn’t deter collectors who can get Richter’s rookie cards for a fraction of Belfour’s. Even Richter’s Upper Deck card sells for $l…
