Prospects Unlimited 2024-25
In the 2024-25 edition of our annual Prospects Unlimited issue, we count down the top 100 21-and-under players in the world (with features on Bedard, Celebrini, Demidov, McGroarty and Benson) and profile the Washingon Capitals development system. WASHINGTON CAPITALS
> WHEN ANDREW Cristall fell to the second round of the 2023 NHL draft, it was confirmation for some that he was too slight and his skating too odd to be considered a blue-chipper. But others felt Washington got the steal of the draft. The following season, Cristall put up 111 points for the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets, and early this year, he was averaging more than two points per game after making a good impression at the Capitals’ training camp. Cristall, who’s in the mix for a role on Canada’s WJC team, knows he needs to be more than just an offensive player and has worked to expand his horizons. “I’m trying to help score and produce,” Cristall said. “But then again, I want to be more reliable. Play hard on the…

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS
> TAKE A LOOK BACK at Luca Del Bel Belluz’s first NHL goal, which came on his first NHL shot, and you’d think he was as cool as the other side of the pillow. Everything from the puck pickup and the angle-changing release down to the wheel-away celebration – a cheeky are-you-not-entertained-style glare into the stands at Nationwide Arena – was that of a confident young scorer. And while there is some of that in Del Bel Belluz, who torched OHL netminders for 70 goals in his final two seasons in the league, that’s not what happened in the moments after he opened his NHL account. “When I scored, I remember I was totally in shock,” he said. “You can see my face. I don’t even know if I knew where…

DALLAS STARS
> WITH ALL THE success the Stars have had with Finnish players over the years, you’d think they’d want Emil Hemming to stay in his home country for a couple more seasons before coming to the NHL. But Dallas left the decision to head to the OHL up to Hemming, who joined the Barrie Colts this season after going 29th overall to the Stars at the 2024 NHL draft in June. Hemming could indeed have stayed with TPS Turku, where the right winger played 40 games and had 11 points in Liiga action last season. But he wanted to challenge himself against players in his peer group and play meaningful minutes in all situations. So, he took the path less travelled and headed across the Atlantic. “I thought this would be…

TOP 100 21 AND UNDER: 32-39
>32. LOGAN STANKOVEN POS: C | AGE: 21 DALLAS STARS (NHL) DRAFT: 47TH, 2021 (DAL) > Forget any concerns there might have been about his size. Stankoven forced the Stars’ hand with his brilliance in the AHL, where he was named the top rookie despite playing just 47 games. Upon arriving in Dallas, he was an impact player almost immediately, including a three-goal, eight-point playoff performance. >33. TIJ IGINLA POS: C | AGE: 18 KELOWNA ROCKETS (WHL) DRAFT: 6TH, 2024 (UTH) > The first-ever draft pick for Utah, Iginla rose up the charts thanks to a blistering second half with Kelowna, where he showed off his devastating shot and goal-scoring acumen. Jarome’s son is a strong candidate for Canada’s 2024 WJC team, and Tij already dominated internationally at the world under-18s last spring. >34. DAVID JIRICEK POS: D |…
