Vince Dunn

AS GOOD AS DUNN

A KEEN SENSE OF timing is often among the best weapons in the arsenal of the NHL’s top offensive defensemen. And given his standing among the leading blueline point producers the past two seasons, it can safely be said that alongside his penchant for delivering a crisp stretch pass and slipping into shooting lanes, Vince Dunn has discovered the fine art of arriving in the right place at the right time. Now, if only that skill could’ve translated to his summer holiday travels. Alas, a trip Dunn had hoped would align with experiencing rabid football fandom during UEFA’s Euro 2024 didn’t quite pan out. “Funny enough, the travel schedule that I had made coincidentally lined up with the Euro teams playing, Italy and Portugal, while I was there,” Dunn said. “And…

ROOKIE REPORT

THE NHL’S 2024-25 rookie class will be a mature one. We expect some fun things from Macklin Celebrini, but the No. 1 pick is the only lock from the 2024 draft class to go straight to The Show. A defenseman such as Artyom Levshunov or Sam Dickinson could break the mold, but it’s more likely we see them in 2025-26. Most of the 10 players on these pages have already seen some NHL action but not enough to squash their Calder Trophy eligibility. To that end, we’ve omitted impressive youngsters such as Simon Edvinsson (Detroit), Brandt Clarke (Los Angeles) and David Jiricek (Columbus), as they’ll officially enter 2024-25 as NHL sophomores, based on the Calder’s games-played rule. There will be some great opportunities for the promising freshmen players on this list, many…

WASHINGTON CAPITALS

BY BEN RABY PREDICTION | 5TH IN METRO THE CAPITALS RETURNED TO the post-season after a one-year absence, though it was hardly conventional. Leaning heavily on netminder Charlie Lindgren, Washington overcame a seven-point deficit in early March and made the playoffs on the penultimate night of the regular season. Washington’s minus-37 goal differential was the worst by a playoff team since 1991. A feel-good story for a resilient bunch? Sure. Sustainable? Unlikely. That’s why management went to work over the summer. In a span of 12 days, the Caps overhauled about one-third of the roster. Through trades and free agency, they added forwards Pierre-Luc Dubois, Andrew Mangiapane, Brandon Duhaime and Taylor Raddysh, blueliners Jakob Chychrun and Matt Roy and goalie Logan Thompson. The acquisitions are all in their 20s, which is a welcome…
