FROM CUB TO BRUIN
The natural progression that is maturation is always a little different for hockey players. With people telling them how special they are from the time they first put skates on, the elite player lives basically from cradle to grave in a world completely foreign to 99.999 percent of the population. Take Tyler Seguin for instance. After all, how many people reach the pinnacle of their craft at 18 and will cash in a trust fund that will pay them an average of $5.75 million a year by the time they turn 21? Almost zero, that’s how many. But sometimes those with charmed lives get a bucket of cold water poured on their heads. The same way they put their pants on one leg at a time like everyone else, they also deal…

Rethinking The Coupe
Why would you take a two-door coupe and double up on the doors? It counteracts the whole point: sporty two-door performance. Yet, like Porsche, Audi and Mercedes, BMW has joined the party with its new 650i Gran Coupe. This deceivingly big car isn’t as maneuverable as BMW’s smaller, performance-minded offerings, lumbering along more than tearing up the tarmac. The Driving Dynamics system offers five modes, from fuel-sipping ECO PRO to Comfort+ to Sport+, which is Bavarian for “brute force and sheer bloody ignorance.” ECO PRO is part of BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology, which eases throttle response, tightens shift points in the eight-speed transmission and makes use of brake-regenerated power to take the load off the alternator. All this smart tech managed to get me over two mountain passes in the middle of…

The Bolder, The Better
IT WAS A PLAN fraught with peril, but high on upside. It was our last night in Ufa, Russia, home of the 2013 world juniors. The cab to the airport for our flight home was coming at 5 a.m. THN video producer Ted Cooper and I had consistently been working past midnight during the tourney (we found out the clock had struck 12 on New Year’s when a bunch of disembodied voices cheered in the near-empty arena as we worked on our laptops). The gold medal game put us in that situation again. What to do? Sleep for a few hours and feel our eyes burn all the way to the airport? Nah, I thought, I ain’t goin’ out like that. The night before, we had discovered a nightclub across the street from…

Konopka’s Wine Is Wild Yet Gentle
It isn’t a word anyone would use to describe Zenon Konopka, but “soft” is how his newest wine under his ZK28 Wines collection is being billed. The Wild One is a white refreshing blend of Vidal, Riesling and Gewurztraminer that’s soft on the palate and finishes smooth. Konopka was hands-on in the making of his newest wine, seeing it through until the finished product. The winemaker wanted a personal connection for his wine, so he named it after the Minnesota Wild (the team he signed with over the summer) and his playing style. “I’m sort of a wild player on the ice,” Konopka says, “so it fits.” One dollar from each purchase of ZK28 Wines goes to stopconcussions.com.…
