BUILDING A BEAST
It’s late July and the weather in Los Angeles is stereotypically beautiful. Walking around the sprawling complex known at the Home Depot Center, I see the tennis stadium, the soccer pitch the L.A. Galaxy use and a full-sized, functioning velodrome. Oh, and Chicago Bulls superstar Derrick Rose just passed me in the hallway. Dang. About 50 kids aged 13-17 are in L.A. for a week of expert seminars (Crosby’s concussion doctor was there), physical training and fun (they…
Bobby Lu Buys In On Poker’s Biggest Stage
ROBERTO LUONGO TOOK a backseat to Cory Schneider at the end of Vancouver’s short-lived playoff run, but during a tumultuous off-season, in which he was the subject of endless trade rumors, the veteran netminder fared well on the felt. Notable celebrities in attendance (none of whom cashed) included actor/comedian Ray Romano, who was eliminated on Day 1, and Jason Alexander of Seinfeld fame and actress…

PARALLEL UNIVERSES
It was the night of Sept. 23, 2005 at the Kingston Memorial Centre. John Tavares was three days removed from blowing out the 15 candles on his cake. Taylor Hall was two months away from celebrating his 14th birthday. In his first Ontario League game, Tavares was killing a penalty for the Oshawa Generals when he picked up a loose puck at center ice, blew past a defender and went top shelf on poor Danny Taylor of the Kingston Frontenacs for the first of his record 215 career OHL goals. “I remember it like it was yesterday,” Tavares said. “It’s still one of the nicest goals I’ve ever scored.” I LOVE THE GAME AND I WANT TO EXCEL AT IT. THERE’S THAT DRIVE AND FIRE TO WIN. THAT’S WHAT GETS ME UP…
