Treat Yourself
Is there anything more fun than trying out new food when you’re travelling? And not classy stuff, but the tasty guilty pleasures – Cherry Coke or Cookie Crisp cereal (back when it was just tiny cookies you would drown in milk) for Canadians in the United States, ketchup chips for Americans going up north. With Los Angeles being such a culinary wonderland, we walked right past anything Wolfgang Puck was trying to shill and headed to a couple of the most-hyped West Coast establishments unavailable back home. So how did they rate? In-N-Out Burger (near UCLA; more than 200 locations in the state) – 7/10 Much has been made of the ‘secret menu’ offered by this classic burger joint and by now it’s not too secret. Which is fine, because all we wanted…

SUMMER SHINNY
His teammates don’t get it. They think he’s crazy. They don’t understand why, just days after the season ends, Sheldon Souray is back on the ice doing it all over again. Take a vacation, they say. Head to Hawaii or some other tropical paradise and just kick back and relax on the sand. Get away from the rink. Get away from playing hockey. No way, says Souray. Besides, the Sunday and Monday game Souray has religiously been playing every off-season for the past 10 years in El Segundo, Calif., is not exactly hockey. Well, not the kind Souray is used to playing in the NHL. This is shinny. Where the jerseys do not match, the scoreboard is turned off and the referees stay home. Where his level of competition includes a 66-year-old…

BUILDING A BEAST
It’s late July and the weather in Los Angeles is stereotypically beautiful. Walking around the sprawling complex known at the Home Depot Center, I see the tennis stadium, the soccer pitch the L.A. Galaxy use and a full-sized, functioning velodrome. Oh, and Chicago Bulls superstar Derrick Rose just passed me in the hallway. Dang. I’m working, but there’s a bunch of teenagers putting in a lot more sweat equity in the middle of the velodrome. They are some of the top prospects for the 2013 NHL draft and are all represented by Creative Artists Agency, whose top clients include Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews and the Sedin twins. About 50 kids aged 13-17 are in L.A. for a week of expert seminars (Crosby’s concussion doctor was there), physical training and fun (they…

Cover Boy A Close Call
It’s safe to say EA Sports’ NHL 13 cover vote, which let fans choose the athlete to adorn the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releases, was a resounding winner. Why else would it get Charlie Sheen’s attention? When the Philadelphia Flyers’ Claude Giroux and the Nashville Predators’ Pekka Rinne faced off in the final vote in early June, Sheen took it upon himself to champion the Preds’ gigantic goaltender. “He deserves it! That’s for sure,” the ex-Two and a Half Men star tweeted. Rinne, a Vezina Trophy finalist two years running, was impressed with the celebrity support. “I don’t really know how that all happened, but I’m sure that brought a lot of votes for me,” Rinne said in Las Vegas, 24 hours before the winner was announced, his opponent sitting across…
