Bauer Hockey has been the biggest name in skates for decades. Now the iconic brand is sizzling and bulldozing to greater popularity across many other equipment categories. Bauer products consistently surfaced at the top in a poll of retailers and elite players (from NHLers without endorsement deals to midget players drafted into major junior) conducted by The Hockey News. “Bauer products are just so good and they’re consistent,” said Greg Evtushevski, owner of Chevy’s Source for Sports in Kelowna, B.C. THE SECRETS TO EUROPEAN DRY-LAND WORK

PETRI MATIKAINEN will be the first to tell you that he, and many other European players, benefited greatly from their off-season dry-land training regimen during the 1980s and early ’90s. Now coach of the Finnish League’s Espoo Blues, Matikainen played for the Ontario League’s Oshawa Generals between 1985 and 1987, losing out on the Memorial Cup to the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers in his final season. He said the dry-land training done during his junior days gave him a bit of an advantage over the North American teenagers he was competing with 20-plus years ago.
