Motzko thinks St. Cloud State has right man
One way to measure a prospective coach is to look at the mentors he has had along the way. In the case of Bob Motzko, the first-year coach of St. Cloud State, you look at the list and can’t help but be impressed. Motzko started as a student assistant coach with the Huskies under the late Herb Brooks. Motzko subsequently worked under George Gwozdecky, architect of defending two-time NCAA champion Denver, and Don Lucia, who led Minnesota to consecutive NCAA titles in 2002 and 2003. Motzko is back at his alma mater in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association after an unusual sequence of events. He was hired as an assistant to Craig Dahl last May. High-powered Preds don’t lack toughness
Nashville played its 500th game in franchise history Oct. 25, and it was a memorable affair. The 5-3 win at home over Chicago extended the Predators’ season-opening win streak to eight games, which also tied the franchise record for the longest unbeaten streak. Winger Paul Kariya notched his 400th career assist on David Legwand’s winning goal in the final minute of the second period. Both streaks ended the following night with a 3-2 overtime loss at Columbus. The Predators also racked up a team-record 95 penalty minutes on the strength of five fighting majors – including three by Jeremy Stevenson.
