FETISOV ‘FIGHT SHOWS FLAWS IN OFFICIATING

When New Jersey Devils’ defenseman Viacheslav Fetisov did not retaliate against Toronto Maple Leaf Wendel Clark’s assault during a game Oct. 23, I expected to hear about the incident for quite some time. I expected to hear accusations of Fetisov being a wimp. But what I did not expect to hear was no reaction to referee Terry Gregson giving Fetisov a minor penalty for roughing. Fetisov did not throw a single punch and, probably thinking he was doing the right thing, did nothing that called for a penalty. A call of this kind certainly proves there is no move on the referees’ parts to limit or control fighting in the NHL. Sadly enough, if Fetisov is taking fighting lessons from Jim Kom, good for him.
