I don&rsquo;t know why it should change.&rdquo; He was, however, consoled by a new $2-million-a-year contract.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

FAMOUS WRITERS RUN IN OUR FAMILY

<div class="byline">BY BOB MCKENZIE</div><p>Dec. 31, 1989 doesn&rsquo;t mark the end of the year so much as it signals the end of the decade. Or, if you prefer, the beginning of a new one.</p><p>Hard to believe, isn&rsquo;t it, that the 1980s are drawing to a close? We&rsquo;ve had 10 years of a 21-team NHL and an equal amount of time to enjoy the bountiful skills of Wayne Gretzky. Safe to say that hockey has never, not since the pre-1967 days anyway, enjoyed such a golden age of stability, prosperity and quality.</p><p>If this were a paid political announcement for the National Hockey League, we could say there&rsquo;s no reason to expect anything less for the new decade that is dawning. But the fact of the matter is that in the big stories of 1989, mixed signals are being sent out that will impact on what will unfold in the &rsquo;90s.</p><p>On the plus side, Gretzky will continue to carry the game on his back. He has said he intends to play another six seasons after 1989-90 and, quite frankly, what better way is there to get to 1995 than with No. 99 at the helm?</p><p>The Soviet invasion, Alexandr Mogilny defection and the drafting of young Swede Mats Sundin No. 1 overall last June highlight the NHL&rsquo;s obsession with elevating skill level, regardless of its origin. This is good and should be encouraged&mdash;not discouraged.</p><p>Bravo, too, for the NHL&rsquo;s attempt to market its product abroad, throughout Europe, specifically the Soviet Union.</p><p>But there are storm clouds formed on the horizon and they&rsquo;re too menacing to ignore.</p><p>More Soviets than ever were able to see NHL games in 1989, but the same cannot be said for Americans victimized by a restrictive and shortsighted television policy that means fewer fans see more games at the outright exclusion of too many others.</p><p>The Alan Eagleson affair of 1989 is a foreboding situation that won&rsquo;t easily dissipate. It was more than an attack on the most powerful man in hockey. It was an awakening on the part of the NHL Players&rsquo; Association membership, an indication that militancy may be on the rise and the status quo will not be accepted when the Collective Bargaining Agreement expires in the fall of 1991.</p><p>The players are tuned in. When NHL president John Ziegler says the game has never been healthier and quotes rising attendance and revenue figures, the 1990s&rsquo; player is wise enough to know he should be getting a bigger slice of the pie.</p><p>But as firm as that NHL foundation appears, it seems a tenuous existence, too, where profit and loss for many clubs is merely the difference of one playoff round.</p><p>And as we prepare to usher in the &rsquo;90s, one can&rsquo;t help but think of the much-discussed issue of expansion and its potential impact. It&rsquo;s been more than 10 years since the league&rsquo;s last growth, when World Hockey Association survivors Hartford, Edmonton, Quebec and Winnipeg were admitted.</p><p>We haven&rsquo;t forgotten those growing pains of the early &rsquo;80s, but it&rsquo;s become kind of comfortable in recent years. No franchise shifts. No franchise foldings. No desperate trouble spots in need of emergency measures.</p><p>Will expansion in the &rsquo;90s force us to surrender that sense of security? Perhaps. But it is hoped that hockey will have learned from its past mistakes and grow slowly but surely, looking before it leaps.</p><p>Questions abound. For now, they far outnumber the answers.</p><p>So until we arrive at a point where there&rsquo;s more information on which to formulate our theories, we must be content to look back on what has already transpired.</p><p>The pages of this publication give us that opportunity. But as you peruse the good, bad and ugly of &rsquo;89, rest assured you won&rsquo;t be alone if you sense we&rsquo;re witnessing the end of an era in hockey.</p><p>All that remains to be seen is whether that&rsquo;s a positive or negative experience.</p><p>Happy New Year? Sergei Priakin of the Calgary Flames was the first. Add defector Alexandr Mogilny and the Soviet invasion totaled nine in &rsquo;89.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

THE SOVIET INVASION

The enormity of it staggering. Alexandr Mogilny, 20, walked away from the Soviet national team at the World Championships in Sweden. He was the first Soviet hockey star to defect and his celebrated flight to freedom took him to Buffalo, where he&rsquo;s projected as an impact player.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Quebec took Sweden&rsquo;s Mats Sundin, who was a little overwhelmed by the whole process. &ldquo;No one has ever asked me for my (autograph) before.&rdquo;<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>
