The sole restriction was that only one individual from each major story of the year&mdash;the Wayne Gretzky Trade, for example&mdash;was considered for inclusion.That said, vte present our top 10 newsmakers of 1988.<h2>1 WAYNE GRETZKY</h2>The King was recrowned even before he became one.Through the accident of his own injuries and the frightening growth of a killer octopus in Pittsburgh, Wayne Gretzky was not the NHL&rsquo;s scoring champion for the first time in eight seasons. He scored 40 goals and 109 assists in 64 games, and finished second to Penguin superstar Mario Lemieux and his 168 points in 77 games.Lemieux was the new king, but Gretzky&rsquo;s loyal subjects pointed out their longtime monarch averaged more points per game&mdash;2.33 to 2.18. The passing of the torch from Gretzky to Lemieux did not go off without a hitch. Gretzky was clearly reluctant to give up his crown.In the playoffs, Gretzky and his friends from Edmonton cleaned up. By the time Edmonton completed its most dominant playoff performance ever, it was conceded Gretzky may have played his best hockey ever.Within three months, Gretzky was gone from Alberta and the grapes of Edmonton&rsquo;s wrath was upon Oiler owner Peter Pocklington.On Aug. 9, the most significant trade in hockey history, perhaps all of sport, was announced. A tearful No. 99 was the centerpiece of a multi-player and multi-million-dollar swap that shook the hockey world to its very foundation.The trade guaranteed Pocklington enduring infamy as the man who traded Gretzky. And so he became a Los Angeles King, less than a month after becoming a husband and seven months before he was to become a father. On July 16, Gretzky and actress Janet Jones exchanged vows in an Edmonton church.They were Canada&rsquo;s royal couple&mdash;soon to join the Kings&rsquo; royal family.<h2>2 MARIO LEMIEUX</h2>Well known to have arms long enough to box with God, Mario Lemieux reached out and caught one in 1988.Whether, in winning his first NHL scoring title and Hart Trophy, Lemieux surpassed Wayne Gretzky as the best player in the game is arguable. No. 99 reminded us with his playoff dominance that the rise of Lemieux doesn&rsquo;t necessarily signal the descent of Gretzky.But there are no more doubts about Lemieux&rsquo;s consistency. Or commitment. Lemieux muted his critics and answered the questions.Now, who&rsquo;s the best?Time will tell.What matters is that Lemieux is clearly on his way to becoming the best that he can be. Which is routinely spectacular.Just as Gretzky fed Lemieux the pass on the goal that won the Canada Cup against the Soviet Union in 1987, he drew the first assist on maturation of Mario into a night-in, night-out dominating player.With Team Canada, Gretzky and Lemieux complemented and challenged each other at the same time, actually escalating their personal rivalry by working together so well. Gretzky was, in effect, wordlessly informing Mario of just how good he could be.The Penguins once again failed to make the playoffs in 1987-88, but No. 66 was spectacular, scoring 70 goals and 168 points. All he did for an encore was open the 1988-89 campaign with 18 goals and 23 assists in 12 games&mdash;the most explosive start in NHL history and a pace that would obliterate Gretzky&rsquo;s incredible singleseason records of 92 goals and 215 points.In 1988, Lemieux went from being always dangerous to damn near unstoppable.<div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0007-011909/8280832-1-eng-US/f0007-012.jpg" title="f0007-01" width="1902" height="2649"></div><h2>3 JOHN ZIEGLER</h2><div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0008-011995/8280825-1-eng-US/f0008-012.jpg" title="f0008-01" width="1852" height="2629"></div>Where&rsquo;s John Ziegler?That question, asked but never answered on Mother&rsquo;s Day of 1988, catapulted the normally reclusive NHL president into the harsh glare of the spotlights.A coach called a referee a &ldquo;fat pig.&rdquo; A member club flouted NHL rules by going to a local judge. On-ice officials staged a wildcat strike, replaced by sweatsuit-clad amateurs. But all anybody wanted to know was, &ldquo;Where&rsquo;s John?&rdquo;Never mind that&mdash;compared to scab football games or six weeks of a baseball season wiped out by a strike&mdash;the actual damage to the NHL was relatively light.Already under indictment in a kangaroo court on a list of charges ranging from dressing too well to being a lawyer to being arrogant to not being Canadian, Ziegler had finally been caught in what appeared to be a grievous act of indifference.&ldquo;I was on a personal errand,&rdquo; Ziegler said at a stormy press conference in Boston a few days later. &ldquo;My personal life is my private matter&hellip;I&rsquo;ll answer to the board, but not to others.&rdquo;Ziegler never received any serious heat from his bosses. Several months later, he acknowledged he should never have left himself out of touch, but scoffed at any suggestion his presence on Shabby Sunday would have altered what transpired.&ldquo;I should have made sure that our staff knew what our backup plans were so that would have been communicated,&rdquo; Ziegler said later. As for the press conference, &ldquo;that was ill-timed, ill-advised, because emotions were running so high. Mine as well. And the atmosphere in which people were asking legitimate questions was very hot. That was mostly my fault.&rdquo;Nevertheless, Ziegler survived the fallout. So did the game.<h2>4 DINO CICCARELLI</h2>Dino Ciccarelli&rsquo;s life experiences in 1988 have led him to one inescapable conclusion. &ldquo;I should have been a lawyer,&rdquo; said the Minnesota North Stars&rsquo; all-time leading scorer.For those keeping score, Ciccarelli&rsquo;s year included three entanglements with the law and one messy contract squabble with North Star management that led to a 24-day holdout from training camp.It all started Jan. 6 at Maple Leaf Gardens, when Ciccarelli repeatedly conked Toronto&rsquo;s Luke Richardson over the head with his stick and punched the Maple Leaf defenseman in the mouth. That led to a 10-game NHL suspension and charge of assault being laid by the Toronto police. In late January, he pleaded guilty to a November, 1987 misdemeanor charge of indecent exposure and was placed on a year&rsquo;s probation. Days later, Ciccarelli was sued by former agent Art Kaminsky for $40,250 for breach of contract.It was August when a Toronto provincial court convicted Ciccarelli of assault sentencing him to a day in jail and $1,000 fine. It made him the first NHL player to be jailed because of an on-ice incident.After the verdict, Ciccarelli was led from court in handcuffs and served only two hours of the sentence because his lawyer filed an appeal. While in his cell, he asked a security guard for some paper and signed autographs for fellow inmates.Then, there were the bitter contract negotiations. Ciccarelli and new agent Ron Salcer demanded a trade and launched verbal attacks against the North Stars&rsquo; management.Ciccarelli signed a four-year deal&mdash;estimated at about $350,000 a year, plus incentive clauses&mdash;three days before the beginning of the regular season.<div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0009-011833/8280818-1-eng-US/f0009-012.jpg" title="f0009-01" width="1878" height="2635"></div><h2>5 BOB PROBERT</h2>Bob Probert awoke on the first day of 1988 with as much right as anybody to feel great about himself and his future. And without a hangover.The night before, the Detroit Red Wing right winger closed out 1987 by scoring his first NHL hat trick.After a checkered alcoholic past, 1988 looked as though it was going to be his year.And it was&mdash;for a while. In February, the 23-year-old was chosen to play in the NHL AllStar Game in St. Louis. A month later, he signed a three-year contract worth $200,000 per season.Probert, with a rare blend of talent and toughness, finished the 1987-88 regular season with 29 goals and 398 penalty minutes. But he and five teammates finished the second season in shame. They were caught in an Edmonton night spot well past curfew.The incident came one night after Probert broke Gordie Howe&rsquo;s Red Wing playoff scoring record with his 21 st point, and one night before the season ended with a loss to the Oilers.In the words of Red Wing coach Jacques Demers, Probert went from &ldquo;all-star to idiot.&rdquo;It was all downhill after that. In training camp, an out-of-shape Probert missed a team flight, went AWOL when demoted to the minor leagues and was, along with drinking buddy Petr Klima, finally suspended without pay.In November, facing the possibility of Probert being declared a free agent, the Wings reluctantly reinstated him. But not before his escapades&mdash;a short-lived stay at the Betty Ford Clinic in Rancho Mirage, Calif., among them&mdash;were well publicized.It&rsquo;s doubtful he&rsquo;ll have reason to awake on New Year&rsquo;s Day, 1989, with as much reason to feel great about his future.<div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0011-011742/8280811-1-eng-US/f0011-012.jpg" title="f0011-01" width="1870" height="2645"></div><h2>6 GUY LAFLEUR</h2><div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0012-011918/8280804-1-eng-US/f0012-012.jpg" title="f0012-01" width="1862" height="2627"></div>Larry Robinson was asked early in the summer of &rsquo;88 why many of hockey&rsquo;s all-time greats are no longer involved in the game.&ldquo;You forget that when these fellows were in the game, they never had a moment&rsquo;s peace,&rdquo; the Montreal Canadien defenseman responded. &ldquo;They gave so much of themselves, so many people wanted things from them, they might actually enjoy being away.&rdquo;During his 3&frac12; years of selfimposed hockey exile, Guy Laf-leur got reacquainted with his family. Watched his children grow. Let the bruises heal. Let the tempo of his life tone down. Purged himself of bitterness, weaned himself from his need for the game&mdash;eventually replacing that need with a growing desire to play.There were guffaws in August when &lsquo;The Flower&rsquo; said he wanted to come back. And there were chortles when, after the Los Angeles Kings said they were not interested, the New York Rangers were.But the 37-year-old was only looking for a chance to answer a question that haunted him ever since he left the Canadiens in 1984: Did he leave the game too soon?&ldquo;People laugh and they say I&rsquo;m crazy, but it&rsquo;s me that has to be satisfied,&rdquo; Lafleur said in August. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t want to wake up one morning when I&rsquo;m 50 years old and still be saying to myself, &lsquo;Why didn&rsquo;t I give it another shot?&rdquo;A month into the 1988-89 season&mdash;after a solid training camp and decent regular-season start (4-6-10 in 13 games)&mdash;there was no reason to believe he had embarrassed anyone.Certanly not himself.Most people retire to find happiness; Guy Lafleur left retirement to find rapture.<h2>7 SEAN BURKE</h2>Sean Burke&rsquo;s impact on the New Jersey Devils goes beyond mere numbers.Because as impressive as they were in 1987-88, more impressive was the hope he brought to a franchise founded on failure. Before Burke carried the Devils into the playoffs with a 10-1-0 record down the stretch, New Jersey had gone five years without advancing past the regular season.During the franchise&rsquo;s preceding eight years, Kansas City and Colorado combined to make the playoffs once.John MacLean&rsquo;s overtime goal on the final night of the regular season put New Jersey in the playoffs, but first the gangly goaltender put them in playoff position.Then, Burke&rsquo;s Devils derailed the New York Islanders and Washington Capitals and came within one win over the Boston Bruins of reaching the Stanley Cup finals.The Devils&rsquo; game-seven loss marked the end of a brilliant season for Burke. It began the previous September with Team Canada, hit full stride in late December when Burke was named MVP at the Izvestia tournament, continued through the Olympics and climaxed May 12 when he stopped 26 shots to lead New Jersey past Boston in game six.Finally, Burke could do no more&hellip;for that season anyway. The Devils are counting on him doing for them what Grant Fuhr has done for the Edmonton Oilers, Billy Smith for the Islanders, and Ken Dryden for the Canadiens.It is the Hall-of-Famer Dryden to whom the 6-foot-3 Burke is most often compared. Pretty intimidating company, but not out of line. &ldquo;All indications are that he&rsquo;s for real,&rdquo; said Devils&rsquo; executive vice-president Max McNab.<div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0013-011746/8280797-1-eng-US/f0013-012.jpg" title="f0013-01" width="1888" height="2619"></div><h2>8 GRANT FUHR</h2><div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0014-011895/8280790-1-eng-US/f0014-012.jpg" title="f0014-01" width="1872" height="2633"></div>He is, say all-star voters, the best goaltender in NHL. He is, says Wayne Gretzky, the best goaltender ever. He is Grant Fuhr.The Edmonton Oiler puckstopper received long-overdue recognition for his extraordinary skills in 1988. After starting the hockey season by backstopping Team Canada to the Canada Cup, Fuhr appeared in a league-record 75 regular-season games and then helped lead Edmonton to its fourth Stanley Cup championship in five years.He was named to the first allstar team and winner of the Vezina Trophy as best goalie. Although long praised as No. 1 at his position, the two honors were firsts during his seven-year career.The soft-spoken native of Spruce Grove, Alta., placed second to Mario Lemieux in MVP voting.When Andy Moog, the Oilers&rsquo; backup goalie, refused to play for Edmonton, and joined Canada&rsquo;s Olympic Team, the onus was on Fuhr to carry the load. He did&mdash;playing in the first 33 games of the season, taking the 34th off, and then appearing in the next 35. Fuhr was in goal for all 19 playoff games.Easy-going and unflappable, Fuhr plays with complete faith in himself. He lets in soft goals periodically, but rarely when a game is on the line. He does not rattle easily.&ldquo;Fuhr&rsquo;s the best (in the NHL) by a country mile,&rdquo; said former Hall-of-Fame goalie Gerry Cheevers. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s just super, he&rsquo;s playing with so much confidence and relaxation. He toys with every situation.&rdquo;An avid golfer, sometimes it seems he&rsquo;s rather be on the links. But Fuhr can&rsquo;t be as often as he&rsquo;d like, because he is too important a link in Edmonton&rsquo;s championship chain.<h2>9 VIACHESLAV FETISOV</h2>The year started badly for Viacheslav Fetisov and the Soviet national team.Already under fire for losing the Canada Cup, the Soviets wound up 1987 by losing the prestigious Izvestia tournament in Moscow to the Canadian Olympic team.Among the main criticisms was the relatively poor play of the Soviets&rsquo; top five-man unit&mdash;anchored by Fetisov. Usually so dominant, the unit appeared to be in a dispirited funk leading up to the Olympics. &ldquo;He&rsquo;s a great player,&rdquo; Canadian Olympic coach Dave King said of Fetisov, &ldquo;but sometimes the lights go out.&rdquo;It was against this backdrop that Fetisov and Co. arrived in Calgary. A week into the tournament, NHLPA executive director Alan Eagleson complicated matters by announcing two Soviet players&mdash;Fetisov and defense partner Alexei Kasatonov&mdash;were almost certain to get permission to play in the NHL as early as March, 1988&mdash;provided they won the gold medal.The pair&rsquo;s NHL rights belong to the New Jersey Devils.Fetisov emerged as the tournament&rsquo;s dominant player and the Soviets, after a slow start, overp-owered its two biggest rivals, Canada and Sweden, to win the gold medal.Against Sweden, Fetisov scored a goal 26 seconds into the game and the rout was on. Fetisov finished the tournament with four goals, nine assists and a plus/minus rating of plus-19.But none of it brought him any closer to being a Devil. The last stumbling block&mdash;the Soviet Ministry of Defence&mdash;kept him at home, refusing to accept his resignation as a major in the Soviet Red Army. The Devils became mere spectators in an internal Soviet tug-of-war.Oh, well, maybe next year.<div class="figure-block image-bleed"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-011729/8280783-1-eng-US/f0015-012.jpg" title="f0015-01" width="1857" height="2644"></div><h2>10 CUFF FLETCHER</h2>Start a conversation with Calgary Flame GM Cliff Fletcher about his management philosophies and the name of his guru&mdash;former Montreal Canadien general manager Sam Pollock&mdash;will be mentioned early. Guaranteed.Fletcher broke into pro hockey in 1957, managing Montreal&rsquo;s junior team in Verdun for $200 a year plus a Canadiens&rsquo; jacket. In 10 years with the Habs&rsquo; organization, Fletcher learned the ropes under the master.Like Pollock, Fletcher subscribes to the quality-through-quantity theory: If you continue to make trades and/or sign free agents, you&rsquo;ll eventually hit a motherlode.In January, he moved his surplus (offensive forward Carey Wilson) to take a chance on a big blue-line project, Dana Murzyn, Hartford&rsquo;s fifth overall pick in 1985.In March, still looking for more size on defense and experience in net, Fletcher traded a bright future prospect, Brett Hull, to get Rob Ramage and Rick Wamsley from St. Louis.Despite being the league&rsquo;s best team during the regular seaon, the Flames fell victim to the Edmonton Oilers in the Smythe Division playoffs.In the days leading up to training camp, Fletcher was at it again. He got Doug Gilmour and Mark Hunter from the Blues in exchange for Mike Bullard. Two front-liners for one.A series of largely overlooked moves made between 1985 and 1988 netted the Flames Jiri Hrdina from Czechoslovakia.The moves were not without risk or controversy. And the heat will be on in 1989 when the playoffs resume.
