OVERAGERS ARE BIG TRADE BAIT
Call it the overage shuffle. Since the end of the 198788 OHL season, 18 deals involving 16 overagers have been made. The mass transfer of 20-year-olds began at this year’s priority selections draft when the Kingston Raiders moved overage defenseman Jeff Sirkka and overage left winger Mark Turner to the Windsor Spitfires. The same day, Peterborough Petes obtained overage defenseman Rob Wilson from the Sudbury Wolves. Sirkka has since moved from the North Bay Centennials to the Toronto Marlboros while Turner is now with Sudbury. There have been 13’other transactions involving overagers. Here’s a look at where the overagers have gone: Niagara Falls Thunder dealt defensemen Garth Joy and Jeff Waver to Kingston and right winger John Purves to North Bay. Standings for the Dodge Ram Tough Award, given annually to the NHL player who scores the most “tough” goals, will be updated regularly in issues of The Hockey News. The award goes to the NHL player who scores the highest combined total of power play, shorthanded, game—winning and game-tying goals during the regular season. Last year’s winner was Joe Nieuwendyk of Calgary, shown here accepting the award from Mike Kelly, Dodge Truck National Advertising Manager. Nieuwendyk scored a total of 42 tough goals. LES KUNTAR St. Lawrence ECAC The sophomore goalie played Horatio at the Bridge against Vermont Nov. 12, turning aside 50 of 52 shots in a 4-2 St. Lawrence victory. CHRIS TANCILL Wisconsin WCHA Junior center Tancill scored four goals in a 5-2 triumph over North Dakota Nov. 11, then scored a goal and an assist next day, another 5-2 win.
