Police Investigate Betting In Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Mayor Bernard J. Dowd has ordered a police investigation of reports of open bookmaking at sports events in Memorial Auditorium, home of the Buffalo Bisons of the A.H.L. Uniformed patrolmen were stationed in the Auditorium during a basketball double-header recently. A Buffalo paper said “there was no doubt that betting activities were curtailed.” One who complained about gambling was the Rev. Timothy J. Dineen, Canisius College athletics moderator.…

“The Count” Shows Improved Play

ST. LOUIS, Mo.— The 1947-4H season has brought brighter days for “The Count” of hockey. Since lie was purchased by St. Louis Flyers from the Boston Bruins at the start of the year. Don Grosso has been one of the Improved players in the American lara-g-fte. Don is presently setting a hoi scoring pace with the Flyers this season and the monthly scoring records released by the A.H.L. last week show that the veteran campaigner is the second highest. Flyer pointgetter next to Paul Gladu. Nicknamed “The Count”, Grosso, who made his name in hockey while playing on the Medicine Line with Sid Abel and Eddie Wares with Detroit Bed Wings several seasons ago, had a poor year last winter. He registered only 36 points while playing with the Bruins and Hershey…

HOW THE RAGE GOES PLAYOFF FIGURES Semi-Final Series The Calgary Stampeders are the champions of the Western Canada Senior League again after their 6-3 triumph over Regina Capitals in Regina last Wednesday. That win clinched the top spot for the Stamps. The final standing show the Stampeders finished up five points ahead of the Caps. With the conclusion of the regular, schedule, Edmonton’s Morey Rimstad emerged as the new scoring champion. The semi-finals got under way on March 5 when Edmonton Flyers took a one-game lead in their best-of-five round with Regina when they bumped the favored Caps 3-2. The Caps bounded back the following night to whip the Curriemen 5-2 and even the series. Goals Galore

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—At the “Father and Son” night game Feb. 27 at the Pan-Pacific here, the near capacity crowd had lots to cheer about. Three hat tricks were registered, 16 goals in all were scored, and it was a fast, wide-open, helter-skelter game. Fred Gibbon and Maurice Vaillancourt of San Diego each bagged three markers as did Los-Angeles right winger Gus Mancuso. San Diego won 10-6.…
