Whistleless Hockey Amazes Experts But Pleases Fans
OTTAWA, Ont.— “Whistless hockey”—the rules under which the oldtimers played here February 28—is an invention of the Civil Servants Recreational Association (R.A.) that stirred the hockey world to consternation two years ago. It all came about because the R.A. was faced with the problem of playing three games in three hours every Sunday afternoon. The brain trust, under former player Ray Kinsella, decided to cast convention to the winds and give the fans the maximum of hockey with the minimum of whistle tooting. So, they did away with all the lines—red, blue or any other color—and just let the players go to it. It produced the least possible whistle blowing only for such heinous offences as warranted penalties—and provided more actual playing time for the participants. The fans liked it, too. Just about the time this epitaph hits the newstands, President Clarence Campbell will be making his official statment in conjunction with the current NHL gambling scandal.—Fans throughout the land are wondering who will be singled out as a result of the investigation, guilt will mean banishment from the NHL for life and speculation is rampant as to what players will be affected. Since the gambling tie-up was announced we’ve personally heard of at least TEN different versions as to the guilty ones. I don’t have to 1 a borate on the personal harm it does to a player to be implicated in such a deal, by the thoughtless accusations of some fan who wants to be the centre of debate when chewing the fat with the boys—and usually these claims…

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—At the “Father and Son” night game Feb. 27 at the Pan-Pacific here, the near capacity crowd had lots to cheer about. Three hat tricks were registered, 16 goals in all were scored, and it was a fast, wide-open, helter-skelter game. Fred Gibbon and Maurice Vaillancourt of San Diego each bagged three markers as did Los-Angeles right winger Gus Mancuso. San Diego won 10-6.…
