TWO MINUTES IN THE BOX
GRAND RAPIDS GRIFFINS POS. Left wing AGE 23 BIRTHPLACE Scarborough, Ont. Start the clock… Funniest thing you’ve seen during a game? “Anders Myrvold wrote his phone number on his stick and held it up against the glass last year for a young lady to see. He’s a real romantic.” Favorite TV show? “Family Guy. Stewie’s my favorite; you’ve got to love a homicidal baby.” Ugliest jersey in the American League? “In my first year, we wore a rainbow, tie-dyed festival jersey. That’s right, a rainbow, tie-dyed festival jersey. I still can’t believe it, either.” Who would play you in a movie? “Denzel Washington or Cuba Gooding Jr. I’d like to say Tom Cruise, but that’d be a hell of an acting stretch for him.” Worst hotel you’ve ever stayed at? “There’s a hotel in Windsor we stayed at where the toilet wasn’t working,…
Phantoms light up league with help of Sharp, Sim
The number ‘17’ is all that’s needed to define the Philadelphia Phantoms’ first half. That’s the AHL-record win streak they put together at the start of the season. With four NHL regulars on the roster, the Phantoms figured to be a contender this year but few expected them to be a powerhouse. SCORING POINTS Patrick Sharp, R.J. Umberger and Jon Sim have been the team’s top scorers. Since coming over in an early season frade, Sim leads forwards with a plus-10. FOR THE DEFENSE Defensemen Joni Pitkanen and Dennis Seidenberg are taking advantage of the AHL experience. SURPRISES Mark Murphy’s point production has declined the past three years, but the right winger, who leads the Phantoms in assists, is on pace for his best point campaign since 2001-02. DISAPPOINTMENTS Injuries and illness have limited…

Lowly Grizzlies can’t score; injuries not helping matters
Things can’t get much lower for the Utah Grizzlies, who had the worst record in the AHL with only nine wins and 20 points in 36 games. Injuries have hurt, but that is just an excuse for some very bad hockey. SCORING POINTS The Grizzlies had a pathetic 71 goals in 36 games. The leading scorer was center Jeff Taffe-with nine goals and 19 points in 27 games-injuries have kept him from playing since mid-December. FOR THE DEFENSE The Utah blueline hasn’t been horrible as a group, but the Grizzlies have allowed 134 goals (almost four per game) because of poor overall team defense. SURPRISES A bright spot has been the improved play of defenseman Matthew Spiller, who will eventually challenge for an NHL spot. DISAPPOINTMENTS Pick a player, any player. But to see…
