Fleury still developing with Baby Pens

Marc-Andre Fleury took it easy over Christmas in Sorel, Que., the first time in two years he was home for the holidays. It has been a whirlwind for Fleury since Pittsburgh made him the first pick in the 2003 NHL draft. He was the Penguins’ starter on opening night in 2003-04, earning first-star honors even though Pittsburgh was blanked 3-0 by Los Angeles. Fleury finished the night with 45 saves. Fleury flamed out, losing eight of nine starts and was sent to Canada’s national junior team. Canada settled for silver at the World Junior Championship in Finland after Fleury conceded a flukey third-period goal. He returned to Pittsburgh, but was soon shipped to junior in Cape Breton. Future and former NHLers are playing in Europe this season. Here are four such players with NHL rights in parentheses: • Martin Rucinsky, 34, LW (Vancouver). With Jaromir Jagr now playing in Russia, Rucinsky has grabbed the scoring lead, with 12 goals and 36 points in 33 games with Litvinov. • Daniel Tkaczuk, 25, C (free agent). Tkaczuk, who played 19 games with Calgary in 2000-01, is the top scorer with the Milano Vipers of the Italian League, netting 14 goals and 36 points in 19 games. • Vitaly Vishnevski, 24, D (Anaheim). Panthers’ lack of success breeds indifference in fans

After becoming the most successful expansion team in NHL history in 1993-94 and advancing to the Stanley Cup final in their third year, the Panthers have been a poster child for dysfunction. Since 2000, they have employed six coaches and five GMs. And they haven’t won a playoff game. LOCAL BUZZ Unless you’re talking about Shaquille O’Neal and the Heat, there’s no buzz. The Panthers always have been the fourth pro sport in town. CAP IMPACT With a $38-million cap and 24 percent rollback, Florida would have some $20 million to spend. The team feels it is in good position to nab quality players from teams trying to get under the cap.
