The New Mexico Scorpions took community involvement to a new level when captain Daniel Tetrault and rookie Alexandre Piche, after hearing calls for help while inside the team’s offices in Albuquerque, chased a purse snatcher through a nearby shopping center parking lot and an apartment complex. While the suspect eluded the pair, Albuquerque police nabbed the suspect minutes later in the apartment complex along with a suspected getaway driver. Tetrault suffered minor cuts on his hand during the chase. Piche was not injured. Scorpions senior vice-president and GM Geoff Kent said the team was proud of Tetrault and Piche for “helping out a person in need and putting themselves in danger, however minimal it may have turned out to be.”…

Plethora of basketball teams distracts fans from lockout

The Hurricanes started the decade as the Hartford Whalers, spent two horrible years in Greensboro and brought the Stanley Cup final to Raleigh in 2002 before falling to last place overall the next season. It’s too soon to say whether hockey can survive in Carolina, but there’s no doubt fans here will support a winner—and shun a loser. LOCAL BUZZ The small core of diehard fans are stricken by the absence of hockey, but with North Carolina, Duke, N.C. State and Wake Forest in college basketball’s top 25, casual fans have their sporting needs met. CAP IMPACT With only Josef Vasicek unsigned and the payroll at about $33 million before any rollback, a $38-million salary cap would require the Canes to spend money. Giguereled Stanley Cup run one of few Ducks highlights

When the Ducks had Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne in the mid- to late 1990s, the parent Walt Disney Co. wouldn’t spend the cash to build a strong supporting cast. Then, thanks in part to goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, the Ducks nearly won the 2003 Stanley Cup. Anaheim fell back out of the playoffs in 2003-04 and, with the team still for sale, the future is uncertain. LOCAL BUZZ Orange County’s few diehard hockey fans miss the NHL as much as anyone, but the general populace likely doesn’t realize there is a lockout.
