Washington’s top three stories of 2004 are: 1. OVECHKIN ON BOARD? The Victoriaville Tigres were dealt a heavy blow when defenseman Matt Nickerson was suspended 11 games. As he began serving the suspension Dec. 12, his team was second worst in the QMJHL at 10-20-2-2 and out of a playoff spot. Nickerson was assessed 10 games for returning to his team’s bench after being escorted off the ice by an official Dec. 3 against the Drummondville Voltigeurs. He was slapped with an additional game for gestures he made. “It’s an understatement to say this is devastating for our team,” said Victoriaville GM John Greene. “I think he’s one of the top five defensemen in the league. “The thing is he didn’t come back to our bench after being sent to the dressing room. He was standing in the vicinity of our bench. There’s nothing in…

The Habs shut out the Bruins 2-0 in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference quarter-final. 2. ACQUIRING ALEX KOVALEV GM Bob Gainey displayed his seriousness and commitment to winning by getting Kovalev who produced only three points in 12 games, but was spectacular in the playoffs, scoring six goals and 10 points in 11 games. 3.
