Patient Phaneuf enjoying WHL life

In his bio on the Red Deer Rebels team website, Dion Phaneuf notes the best advice he has received. ‘Good things come to those who wait’, is listed among the other Phaneuf info you can find, such as his favorite TV shows being Will and Grace and Friends and his favorite player is Scott Stevens. It’s a good thing the Calgary Flames’ top prospect understands a little patience. Upon signing the defenseman, whom Calgary drafted ninth overall in 2003, in midSeptember, Flames coach-GM Darryl Sutter said Phaneuf’s presence in the Stampede City would pretty much be a certainty in the coming season. Make that, if there is a season. However, as we all know, that little thing called a lockout has put the delay on Phaneuf’s NHL debut. He has gotten over the unhappiness. “There was disappointment…

Schremp fitting right in during the giving season

As good as it gets - that’s the only way to describe Rob Schremp’s season. He is one of the Ontario League’s leading scorers, his London Knights broke the CHL record for longest undefeated streak and he was named to the U.S. junior team. “It’s been incredible,” said the 5-foot-11, 200 pound center. “Making the World Junior team is a very big honor for me.” Once criticized as selfish and one-dimensional, Schremp is growing by leaps and bounds under coach Dale Hunter. “He’s not cheating offensively, he’s trying to play physical when he has to, he’s a really good teammate,” said Oilers assistant GM Scott Howson. “I think that’s why he’s been selected to the U.S. team.”…Left winger Ethan Moreau on the CBA negotiations: “What do we do, come up…

St-Jacques flourishing following hernia surgery

Defenseman Bruno St-Jacques has bounced up and down from the minors since he was acquired from the Flyers in February 2003, sometimes impressing and sometimes disappointing, but always bothered by abdominal problems. After missing the last 13 games of last season, St-Jacques had surgery over the summer to diagnose and repair a sports hernia. “I can skate again,” St-Jacques said. “It’s like it’s a whole new game.” Carolina trainer Pete Friesen said it often takes a year for a player to fully recover from the surgery, but St-Jacques’ game on the ice already has improved. He has been a physical dynamo for Lowell (AHL) and is a plus-9…With the Lock Monsters playing in Norfolk - as close as they’ll get to Raleigh this season - the Hurricanes brought nine busloads…

Panthers prospect Meyer tearing up Western League

After seeing center Stefan Meyer play scores of times as a young teenager, Panthers head amateur scout Darwin Bennett persuaded former GM Rick Dudley to take the now 19-year-old in the second round (55th overall) in 2003. Eighteen months later, it’s paying off. Playing for Medicine Hat (WHL), Meyer is fourth in the league with 20 goals and 15th with 30 points. Two weeks ago, he was invited to Canada’s selection camp for the World Junior Championship tournament. “Stef’s been playing well so far this season,” Bennett said. “He will need to spend some time in the AHL…but I think eventually he could become a third line center in the NHL.”…Goalie Roberto Luongo sprained his ankle at a Quebec charity game and must stay off the ice until early January…Defenseman…
