Torres tearing up American League: ‘Things just feeling good right now’

After leading the Oilers with 20 goals last season, there was little doubt left winger Raffi Torres would make a significant impact in the American League during the lockout. But not even he expected the success he’s had. “I’m feeling very comfortable and, you know what, I’m having a lot of fun,” said Torres, who scored nine goals in his first nine games with the Edmonton Road Runners, including a four-goal night against Milwaukee Nov. 24. “When you’re putting numbers up and putting pucks in the net your confidence is going to go up. Things are just feeling good right now.”…Edmontonians are going through hockey withdrawal, but commissioner Gary Bettman told them to hang tough, as a temporary work stoppage is better than the permanent death of small-market teams. “Franchises…

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

JAGR’S ATTITUDE STINKS I greatly appreciated The Hockey News’s recent ‘Minor League Marvels’ feature, especially when I saw Jaromir Jagr’s “Money is important” comment in another story. (THN, Nov. 23) Even if the NHL and players’ union reach a CBA agreement, I would prefer to watch replacement players rather than pay to see players such as Jagr. His attitude is repulsive. Patrick Lefebvre,Brassard, Que. NHL LACKS ENTERTAINMENT I just watched a replay of the classic 1978-79 semifinal Game 7 between Montreal and Boston. What action and excitement! The footage doesn’t lie. It shows smaller goalie equipment, little in the way of obstruction and netminders who seldom handled the puck. For the betterment of the game, I urge the NHL to make the changes necessary to restore the league’s entertainment value. Dan Durrer, Oakville, Ont. LETTER OF THE WEEK After reading the…

Sundin’s Swedish League services subject of home-front bidding war

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin has been his usual quiet self off the ice since the NHL lockout began, spending much of his time golfing in Spain. But while Sundin was pursuing his other athletic passion, there was a bidding war brewing for his services in the Swedish league. Sundin’s club team is Djurgarden and he has reportedly told the team if the NHL season is cancelled and he plays, it will be for Djurgarden. But that hasn’t stopped the last-place Malmo Redhawks from aggressively courting Sundin. Redhawks president Percy Nilsson flew to Spain in late November to meet with Sundin in an effort to woo him. He presented a proposal to Sundin in which the southern Swedish team would rent him an apartment in Denmark. That way, Sundin…

NOTEBOOK

Jim Duhart, who led the United League with 56 goals last season, has, by all indications, played his last game with the Danbury Trashers after being placed on team suspension in late November. “The chances of me playing in Danbury again are slim and none,” said Duhart, who was traded to the Trashers by Flint in the off-season. “I’m weighing my options.” Coach Todd Stirling said Duhart was suspended for actions detrimental to the team, but wouldn’t get specific. “Right now, there’s not a lot of involvement (between Duhart and the Trashers),” said Stirling to the Danbury News-Times. Stirling spoke with Flint about trading Duhart back to the Generals, but Flint coach Robbie Nichols didn’t sound optimistic a deal could be done. Duhart had 15 points in 16 games prior…
