Turco’s hip surgery has him feeling great

Marty Turco feels healthy maybe for the first time in three years. The Stars goalie underwent hip surgery in April and said the procedure helped relieve pain that has dogged him for much of his pro career. “It feels great-1 mean, really great,” Turco said. “It makes a big difference.” So, with a healthy hip and a hankering to test it out, Turco has made himself available to the Original Stars Hockey I-eague. While he is unsure with which team he’ll play, Turco is looking forward to the on-4 competition. “I need to play,” he said. “I feel good and it’s time to play, so I want to go out and play.” Turco, who was 1-4 with a 3.32 goals against average in last year’s playoffs, said he’s eager to forget that performance. “This is a…

HOCKEY WORLD IN BRIEF

GLADIATORS JUST DON’T GIVE UP Hockey’s Gladiators are waiting to see if a License is approved by the Massachusetts Boxing Commission before dropping their gloves. The twice-shifted hockey fighting tournament has been given new life by a proposal to hold it in the Boston suburb of Lowell. Former Bruins enforcer Lyndon Byers, now a radio host, has taken an active role in Hockey Gladiators. The event was first proposed as a two-day, 32-man event in which former hockey players in full equipment would skate on to the ice for the sole purpose of a 1-on-l fight. Its venue shifted from Minneapolis to Winnipeg, but the show was halted due to legal concerns. If given approval, the Lowell event would be a one-day, 16-man competition with the winner getting $100,000. JUNIOR TEAMS TAKING…

Butcher eager to move on

Former NHL defenseman Garth Butcher hopes to get his life back in order after being found not guilty of rape. Butcher, 41, was accused of assaulting a former waitress in a Mississauga bar he co-owned. In the three-day trial, court was told the young woman accepted his invitation to join him alone at his near by hotel on Dec. 12, 2002 after a night of socializing. Crown prosecutor Christina Lynch said the university student blacked out from too much drinking and claimed she awoke and found Butcher taking advantage of her condition. Defense lawyer David Humphrey said the woman’s memory in some statements and gaps in others was “too convenient” an excuse. Butcher said he was confident of being acquitted. “I’m looking forward to going home,” Butcher told the Toronto Sun. “I’m relieved it’s over.” Butcher,…

Jacket slugger Shelley ’all domesticated now’

Jody Shelley spent part of his summer picking out china patterns and stemware. “And flowers,” the Columbus enforcer said with a laugh. Shelley was married to Mandy Thompson in early June at a resort area southeast of Columbus. “I’m all domesticated now,” Shelley said. But he’s still champing at the bit to get back out on the ice. “It’s killing me, just like it is a lot of guys right now,” he said. “And it’s only going to get worse when the weather gets cold. When it starts snowing, it’ll probably drive me crazy.” Shelley spent part of the summer in Edmonton, working out and skating with a group of NHLers. He has considered signing in Europe. “I feel like I’ve gotten a little better in terms of my all-around game each season,” Shelley said. “That’s…
