Sweeney a Boston-type player
When they talk about “Boston hockey,” they're talking about guys like Bob Sweeney. Born in nearby Boxborough, p Mass., Sweeney took the collegiate route to the pros, signing on with Boston College in 1982. He played 10 NHL seasons, six of which came with his hometown Bruins. “Very few local kids ever got to wear that 'B',” said Sweeney, now 40 and president of Boston's alumni organization. “I knew how special an opportunity I was given.” Following a college career that included a Hockey East all-star nod in 1985, Sweeney spent a year in Boston's farm system after being drafted 123rd overall in 1982. “Being in the minors was really good,” said Sweeney of his 1986-87 season with Moncton of the American League. “That's where you learned how to play the pro game; I don't…
