Everything under review now that Francis is gone

With Ron Francis gone in his shocking move to Toronto, the Hurricanes have a tremendous void to fill on and off the ice. Francis was in his fifth season as the Canes, captain and at 41, still playing more than 16 minutes per night. “Everything is under review right now,” said Carolina coach Peter Laviolette. “It’s an opportunity for someone to grab his ice time and his leadership role, to take charge of the team on the ice and in the locker room. I don’t know who that person is going to be.” Laviolette said no new captain would be appointed this season, although the Canes were considering adding a third alternate to join Rod Brind’Amour and Glen Wesley. Stars add weapons without subtracting

Stars GM Doug Armstrong used every trick in the book to provide depth for his team via the trade route. If a few of his gambles pay off, he could be labeled a genius. However, if other Western Conference teams get more out of their acquisitions, the Stars could simply be called cheap. Dallas yielded only a second, third and eighth round draft pick (as well as fringe prospect Drew Bagnall), but were able to add winger Valeri Bure and defensemen Chris Therien and Lubomir Sekeras at the March 9 trade deadline. Mix that with the previous free agent signing of Shayne Corson and the Stars spent almost nothing to plug several holes.
