Dandenault not complaining about Mr. Versatility role
Mathieu Dandenault has done it all for the Detroit Red Wings this season-left defense, right defense, left wing, right wing md now even center. Dandenault played center until junior and he volunteered to try it again. Coach Dave Lewis took him up on the offer and put him between Steve Thomas and Darren McCarty for a game, creating a forechecking line with speed up the middle and grit on the wings. “If I would have had it my way a long time ago, I would have stayed at one position and probably gotten better at it,” Dandenault said. ’It’s just the way my career has gone on. Fernandez adjusting to life as Wild’s backup goaltender
Not since his days as backup to Ed Belfour in Dallas had Manny Fernandez spent so much time opening the door to the players’ bench. It was his first game since coach Jacques Lemaire designated all-star Dwayne Roloson as the team’s starting goalie after two-plus seasons of competition between the netminders. “Four weeks…1 knew it was going to be tough,” Fernandez said. The start capped a tumultuous week for the athletic and emotional Fernandez, who accepted his newly defined role while his name was being bandied about in rumors as the March 9 trade deadline approached. “Down the stretch, (Roloson is) going to…

Ryder changes Bonavista’s color
Montreal Canadiens rookie right winger Michael Ryder, in case you haven’t heard, is from the thriving metropolis of Bonavista, Nfld., population roughly 4,400. This can have its advantages and its drawbacks. On the plus side, it’s highly unlikely the town’s loyalties will be divided for as long as Ryder is in the NHL. Wherever Ryder’s career may take him, the heart of Bonavista will be right there with him, whooping and hollering and tugging on his sweater no matter the color. He does not know if there are any “Welcome to Bonavista: Home of Michael Ryder” signs on the road into town (answer: there are two, plus another at the stadium), but he has been told the once-scorned Hab jerseys have become amazingly popular. “I talk to a couple friends at home and they…
