Maine rink rat valued player of Bears family

Derek Damon began his career as a rink rat at 22 months old when he hung on to his father Doug’s back pockets as he skated around Maine’s Alfond Arena in Orono. He always aspired to play for the Black Bears and he idolized ex-Maine sniper Jean-Yves Roy. Damon, who grew up 10 miles south of Orono in Bangor, is in his second season living his dream. The center is the first player from the Bangor-Orono area to become a Black Bear regular. Local player gets boffo holiday gift

Sam Paolini Jr. came home for Christmas to see family and friends. He ended up with the greatest present imaginable. Back in Rochester for the holidays thanks to the Christmas break from the ECHL’s Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies, Paolini ended up making his American League debut for the Cleveland Barons. The Barons were short a player for the Dec. 23 game in Rochester because captain Tavis Hansen came down with the flu. Aware Paolini planned to attend the game as a fan, Barons defenseman Doug Murray told Barons coach Roy Sommer that his former Cornell teammate could be a capable fill-in.
