Injury to Lindros prompts roster shuffle
Only the Rangers would respond to an injury to their first line center by signing and then promoting a 30-year-old free agent in order to give a 42-year-old more ice time while placing a 23-year-old on waivers. That's exactly what coach-GM Glen Sather did in the aftermath of Eric Lindros's Oct. 20 sternocavicular chest sprain that was expected to sideline No. 88 until at least early November. Sather signed 30-year-old free agent Pascal Rheaume, who had been skating for Hartford under an American League try out, before immediately promoting the former Devil to New York to skate on the fourth line. He then moved 42-year-old Mark Messier from the fourth line into Lindros's spot. In order to accommodate Rheaume, Sather placed Sheldon Keefe, whom he'd claimed from Tampa Bay in the…
Fedorov playing with NHL aspirations
Though a lack of team game was the most glaring of his past sins, Manitoba Moose right winger Fedor Fedorov has begun the sea-son with a confident flourish. Fedorov, 22, started with four goals and nine points in four games to lead the league's scoring race after one week and there was plenty of talk about when, not if, he'll get promoted. Asked to share what counsel Moose coach Stan Smyl-one of Fedorov's strongest backers in the Vancouver organization-has given him this season, Fedorov said: “The only things Stan has said to me were, 'Let's get back to work. You're obviously going to make it to the next level, so just keep working and your time will come.' “ His talent has prompted Canucks GM Brian Burke to say on several occasions that…
Gaborik swaps agents in bid for new deal
After terms of his contract negotiations were publicly parsed, Marian Gaborik caused a stir when he shifted bargaining responsibilities from agent Allan Walsh to partner David Schatia. Upset over how his standoff with the Wild became rancorous, Gaborik told the Slovakian news agency SITA he made the change to bring “new blood” to the bargaining table and expressed a willingness to be “flexible” in an effort to end the month-long impasse. On Oct. 16, Gaborik returned to Minnesota from his native country to meet face-to-face with Schatia as negotiations heated up. “If a deal can get done, I'm staying here,” Gaborik said. Walsh and Schatia also represent left winger Pascal Dupuis, the Wild's other unsigned restricted free agent. Schatia also took over Dupuis's negotiations, but downplayed the transition. “Allan is very much involved,” Schatia…
