DiPietro, Snow return, form solid net tandem
The Islanders will have zero holdouts - and more importantly, two hungry goaltenders competing for the No. 1 job - when they report to training camp in Wheeling, W.V., Sept. 12. Isles GM Mike Milbury completed a flurry of one-year contracts over late July and early August, including the signings of free agent goalies Rick DiPietro and Garth Snow for 2003-04. DiPietro, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 draft, accepted his one-year qualifying offer of $1,182 million. Snow, whose $2-million option the Isles declined to exercise last month, re-upped at a reduced rate of $1,313 million. “Garth wanted to be here and we wanted him here,” Milbury said. “Garth was a major factor in us getting back to the playoffs last season and he’s a very positive influence on not just…

Bure’s knee problems put career in jeopardy
Eight months after his second right knee arthroscopy within 10 weeks and five months after having played his final game last season, Pavel Bure continues to feel significant discomfort in the knee, enough that his career must be considered endangered. “Pavel came into New York from Moscow on (July 29) for tests that confirmed that he has ligament damage that hasn’t been overcome and that he might not be able to be overcome,” said Mike Gillis, Bure’s agent, to the New York Post. “His knee is bothering him; it hurts. “Whether he’ll be able to play next year, no one can say. Pavel did three weeks of rehab in Florida immediately after the season, he’s been working out in Moscow, he’s in great shape…he’s done everything possible so he can. come back…
Moose drop blueline stalwart Chapman
After six seasons as Manitoba’s rock on defense, Brian Chapman was cut loose by the Moose mid-way through the off-season. The 35-year-old Manitoba captain played 60 games for the Moose last season and 14 more in the playoffs, showing no decline in his play. But the team opted not to offer Chapman a contract and instead signed veteran defenseman Dallas Eakins, 36, who played last season with the Chicago Wolves. Chapman, Manitoba’s franchise leader with 447 games played, was philosophical about the bad news. “Am I surprised? Well, a little bit. I’m disappointed, but not crushed. I couldn’t expect them to go on forever with it. There’s no bitterness here.” Chapman said he’s intent on continuing his career, which includes 1,087 regular season pro games. He has played just three games at the NHL…
