Barnett adds depth In summer dealings
The Coyotes are changing their logo and their uniforms next season. Maybe they should change their name, too. The Squirrels would be appropriate, judging by how they’ve squirreled away so much depth this summer. Already overloaded on defense, Phoenix re-signed captain Teppo Numminen to a one-year deal, brought in two more blueliners from Carolina (David Tanabe and Igor Knyazev) in the Danny Markov trade, then felt they needed more grit so they signed veteran Cale Hulse to a free agent deal. They have 10 serviceable players to compete for six spots. “I think we’re set on defense,” quipped GM Mike Barnett. Canucks like look ot May In Vancouver
It was May Day in July as the Canucks signed unrestricted free agent Brad May to a reported two-year, $2-million contract. The move was somewhat of a surprise, as many expected the rugged left winger to resign with Phoenix or be acquired by another club. A first round draft pick (14th overall) of Buffalo in 1990, May spent 6-1/2 seasons with the Sabres before being traded to Vancouver during the 1997-98 season. May left for the Coyotes as a free agent in 2000, but rejoined the Canucks last season at the trade deadline in exchange for a conditional draft pick. “Getting back in Vancouver was a positive step in my hockey career.
