NHL needs direction
In the NHL’s ideal world, this time of year would see sportswriters trumpeting the resolution of another entertaining season, fans excitedly recounting highlight-reel plays and players and teams reaping the benefits of a burgeoning industry. But this season was far from ideal. Franchises went bust. Offensive wizardry was again abandoned for the kind of stultifying defensive game that only coaches-feeling management’s hot breath down their collars-can stomach. Future with Fleury looks much better
At precisely 7:51 a.m. on June 21, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ rebuilding movement took a sudden and dramatic turn. That is when Florida Panthers GM Rick Dudley phoned Penguins GM Craig Patrick to finalize a trade that would allow the Penguins to take prized Quebec goaltending prospect Marc-Andre Fleury with the first overall pick later that day. “He’s far and away the best goaltender in the draft,” Patrick said. Fleury, who starred for Canada at the World Junior Championship, probably will return to Cape Breton of the Quebec League next season, but he should be ready for the NHL soon after.
