Greenhorn Sullivan latest to lead Bruins

The worst-kept secret in Boston was finally revealed in late June when Mike Sullivan was introduced as the 25th coach in club history. Sullivan got his feet wet as a coach last year when he was behind the bench of the Bruins’ top minor league affiliate in Providence. When Robbie Ftorek was fired in March, replaced by GM Mike O’Connell, Sullivan came up from the minors and served as an assistant until the club was eliminated by New Jersey in the first round of the playoffs. “I kept coming back to Mike when going over all the qualities I was looking for in a coach,” O’Connell said. “He relates well to players while earning their respect, he knows the players in our organization and he believes you can play an up-tempo style…

Foligno returns home to work with Wolves

The Sudbury Wolves have named one of their most famous alumni as their new coach and GM. Mike Foligno, who played with the Wolves in the mid-to late 1970s and who went on to enjoy a 15-year NHL career, takes over from Bert Templeton, who was fired at the end of the season. Foligno resigned as coach of the American League’s Hershey Bears, where he had coached for five seasons, so he could take the Sudbury position. The 43-year-old is a native of Sudbury and was voted by Wolves fans during the 1996-97 season as the most valuable player in team history. His number was also retired during the team’s 25th anniversary celebration. Foligno coached in the NHL as an assistant with Toronto and Colorado.
