BIG GAME Hunter

The red line of blood ran across the ice like stained jet exhaust fallen from the sky. At the end of the trail lay a curled-up Scott Stevens, his hands covering the side of his face where a puck fired head-high from 20 feet away shredded skin near his left ear seconds earlier. New Jersey GM Lou Lamoriello watched his captain’s slide from a private box at the Tampa Bay Ice Palace. Lamoriello’s heart beat double-time as he headed downstairs to check out Stevens’ condition. It wasn’t the play that scared him. HOCKEY WORLD IN BRIEF

PLAYOFF RATINGS A BUST IN U.S. TORONTO Television ratings of NHL playoff action was at a record-low through two rounds. ABC is averaging a 1.1 rating for its Saturday afternoon broadcasts, down 21 per cent from last season. That compares to 10.3 for the average NFL rating, 5.7 for NASCAR, 2.5 for MLB and 2.5 for NBA. Ratings aren’t expected to get better in the final two rounds as Ottawa and Vancouver carry little interest to U.S. viewers, and Anaheim, Minnesota and New Jersey are not among the top 10 TV markets in the U.S. In Canada, CBC’s first round average is down 11 per cent from last season, while TSN is up 29 per cent from what Sportsnet did with a smaller subscriber base last year. NHL TEAM REPORTS

Impending sale no worry to Waddell

Early indications were that David McDavid, who signed a letter of intent to purchase the Thrashers, Hawks and Philips Arena from AOL/Time Warner, is content with the direction of the hockey team and planned no major changes. That’s not surprising, but it has to make GM Don Waddell feel a bit relieved, given the uncertainty any time new ownership takes over. Atlanta went 9-4-1-1 in the final 15 games and for the first time after four seasons can feel good about playoff chances next year. “It hasn’t been a big deal because we haven’t had to hold up any decisions,” Waddell said of the franchise’s impending sale: “But obviously we’re heading into an important part of the summer, when decisions have to be made. So if this is going to…
