NHL TEAM REPORTS

Awful season triggers huge changes

In a 48-hour period in early April, the Flames significantly re-made their hockey operations department, naming Darryl Sutter coach-GM after they declined to pick up the option year on former GM Craig Button’s contract. In addition to purging Button and his assistant Dan Stuchal, the Flames accepted resignations from Lanny McDonald, executive assistant to hockey operations and assistant coach Brian Skrudland. Counting the mid-season decision to fire coach Greg Gilbert and assistant Brad McCrimmon, six of the nine members of the hockey department from last September are now gone. Sutter said the No. 1 priority was getting the team’s 14 restricted and two unrestricted free agents under contract… Button said he was “disappointed and hurt” by the decision. “If I said anything contrary to that, I’d be lying. Czerkawski a reluctant playoff Dog

MariuszCzerkawski was told he would be playing hockey this spring, but it wouldn’t be for his first choice of teams. Czerkawski, a veteran of 629 NHL games, said he was put out when he heard the news. “You get your mind set on something everybody’s been talking about,” he told the Hamilton Spectator. “It’s obviously a big disappointment for the Polish national team.” AHL EAST NOTEBOOK Czerkawski, who played 20…

Bolts discipline Roy for lack of control

Left winger Andre Roy did not travel to Washington for Games 3 and 4 of Tampa Bay’s first round series against the Capitals after an unusual incident in Game 2 at the St. Pete Times Forum. Roy was benched in the first period and then banished to the dressing room for the second and third after taking a post-whistle roughing penalty. He got a tongue-lashing from coach John Tortorella after he beefed with referee Kerry Fraser as he skated to the bench after the Capitals scored a power play goal. Roy-who has been suspended 16 games and fined $100,000 by the league since being acquired by Tampa Bay from Ottawa in March, 2002—has been under orders to keep his emotions under control. He was scheduled to rejoin the team March 18 for Game…
