Lure of post-season too much for Williams

Funny how the very thought of a playoff game can seem to speed up the healing process of an injury. A knee operation in January was supposed to keep Justin Williams out for a minimum of four months. But with the post-season beckoning, the third-year right winger made it back in less than three. After sitting out the first game of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series against Toronto, Williams was back in uniform for Game 2. By Game 3, he was making contributions, including an assist on an Eric Desjardins goal. “I know people say I’m coming back fast, but two-and-a-half months is a long time to be away from the game,” Williams said. “Ten years ago they said it took about nine months for an injury like this, but I did what…

Martin won’t change his coaching ways

It didn’t take long for fans and media to turn up the heat on Senators coach Jacques Martin. Following an ugly performance in Game 1 of the club’s playoff series against the New York Islanders, Ottawa fans were calling for Martin’s head, but things became a lot quieter after the Senators won the next two games. Still, it shows the importance of the Senators having success in the post-season and Martin is well aware that if the club doesn’t get out of the first round, there’s a good chance his tenure will be over. Martin has been accused of being a coach who has a difficult time adjusting in the playoffs. “That’s part of being in this business and I’m not going to change the way I do things,” he said. “We have a…

UNITED STATES LEAGUE

Might the United States League absorb several members of the rival North American League? Though he wouldn’t comment specifically, USHL commissioner Gino Gasparini has acknowledged the idea is being discussed. Gasparini wouldn’t name names, but reliable sources have suggested NAHL teams Soo Kewadin (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.), Texas, Danville (III), Detroit Compuware and perhaps even Cleveland have either approached or been approached by the USHL to consider the possibility. Should the discussed expansion come to fruition, the USHL could potentially opt for a third, eastern-based, division, an idea that has been bandied about in Jr. A circles for some time. The NAHL is a Great Lakes-based junior circuit that has produced players such as Nashville’s Dave Legwand and Doug Weight of St. Louis. SPOTLIGHT TEAM KOOTENAY ICE Arena Cranbrook Rec.
